Purpose of Job

The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for the management and administration of the on-site occupational health clinic within the mining operation. The primary function is to ensure the implementation and maintenance of comprehensive occupational health programs, providing clinical care, health surveillance, and health education to employees, all in compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations.

Key Accountabilities
  • Manage and oversee daily operations of the occupational health clinic, including resource allocation, scheduling, and maintaining clinic facilities.
  • Conduct health surveillance day to day Primary health Care, TB/HIV testing and counseling as per legislative requirements.
  • Implement and monitor workplace health programs to prevent, detect, and manage occupational diseases and injuries.
  • Maintain detailed medical records and ensure strict confidentiality and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Provide emergency care and coordinate evacuations or referrals to appropriate medical facilities when necessary.
  • Collaborate with mine management, SHE teams, and external agencies to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and company policies.
  • Identify, evaluate, and control workplace health hazards by participating in risk assessments and workplace inspections.
  • Report and investigate work-related injuries and illnesses as required by law, including completion of statutory reports (e.g., Section 11.1 reports under the Mine Health and Safety Act).
  • Facilitate health education and promotion initiatives, including training employees on occupational health risks and safe work practices.
  • Advise management on applicable health and safety legislation and best practices in occupational health.
  • Participate in the development and review of mine health and safety procedures and emergency response plans.
  • Ensure medical equipment and consumables are maintained and calibrated according to standards.
Formal Education and Qualifications
  • Registered Professional Nurse with additional qualification in Occupational Health Nursing (as required by SANC).
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and relevant regulations.
  • At least 3-5 years’ experience in occupational health, preferably in the mining industry.
  • Familiarity with workplace health risk assessments, health surveillance protocols, and clinical record keeping.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and team leadership skills.
  • Computer literacy, especially in medical record management systems.
Working Conditions

Remote mining clinic environment within a mine operation involves traveling. Potential exposure to occupational health risks (e.g., dust, noise, chemicals). Use of PPE as required.
