Job Title: School Counsellor

Responsible to: Head of School Counsellor

Responsible for: To support the social, emotional, and academic wellbeing of students

These guidelines are written in support of the role and include, yet are not limited to, the following key tasks and accountabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM) Code of Ethics, ISP safeguarding policies, and international best practices.
  • Maintain confidentiality while balancing safeguarding and duty of care.
  • Model professionalism in punctuality, attire, reliability, and respectful communication.
  • Represent the counselling team positively within the school and community.
  • Provide individual and group counselling to support students’ emotional, social, and academic wellbeing.
  • Develop counselling goals, session plans, and reflections tailored to student needs.
  • Apply evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and ethical counselling approaches.
  • Identify at-risk students and escalate safeguarding concerns appropriately.
  • Coordinate referrals to external professionals where necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and timely counselling notes using the school’s designated platform.
  • Prepare professional reports when required.
  • Ensure documentation is purposeful and student-centred.
  • Contribute to ISP’s wellbeing strategy through initiatives, campaigns, and themed activities.
  • Deliver workshops, assemblies, and psychoeducational sessions for students, staff, and parents.
  • Collaborate with teachers, tutors, and pastoral staff to enhance student support.
  • Actively participate in the Team Around the Child (TAC) framework.
  • Work closely with the counselling team and wider pastoral staff.
  • Attend counselling meetings and case discussions.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, supervision, and reflective practice.
  • Share knowledge and resources to build staff capacity in wellbeing.
  • Build strong relationships with parents, offering guidance on parenting, resilience, and adolescent development.
  • Involve parents in the counselling process when beneficial.
  • Provide crises management and emergency interventions when required.
  • Uphold ISP’s values of inclusivity, diversity, and respect.
  • Contribute to the annual counselling calendar to ensure proactive and purposeful programming.
Requirements
  • Master Degree in Counselling, Psychology, or related field.
  • Registered with Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ counselling experience, ideally in an educational or international school setting.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and adolescent development.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and families.
  • Proficiency in Mandarin is an added advantage.
