Primary Assistant Principal (Academic) 2026-27

Job Overview

The Primary Assistant Principal (Academic) is a key member of the Primary Senior Leadership Team. The role focuses on improving the quality of the curriculum, pedagogy and assessment; ensuring high‑quality academic quality assurance systems and strengthening staff performance and student outcomes across the Primary School. The post-holder will work closely with the Head of Primary, the Academic Leadership Team, Heads of Department and Pastoral leaders to create the best possible environment for learning.

Specific Areas of Responsibility
Academic Line Management & Leadership Structures
  • Chair and lead the Academic Leadership Team (Subject Coordinators).
  • Line manage multiple academic departments and their Subject Coordinators.
  • Support with quality assurance across departments including lesson observations, work scrutiny and learning walks.
  • Ensure consistency, rigour and alignment across curriculum, pedagogy, assessment practice and reporting.
Curriculum, Pedagogy & Assessment
  • Support the Head of School in shaping a coherent, ambitious and well‑sequenced Primary curriculum.
  • Support the development of evidence‑informed pedagogy and instructional practice across the school.
  • Ensure assessment systems (including baseline, formative and summative assessments) are robust, reliable and used to inform teaching.
  • Oversee academic reporting cycles and ensure reporting is accurate, timely and purposeful for students and parents.
  • Use internal and external data to identify trends, target groups and priority areas for improvement.
  • Lead academic intervention strategies, ensuring alignment between Curriculum and Pastoral teams.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Principal (Pastoral) so that academic support, mentoring and intervention are well‑coordinated through Heads of Year and Class Teachers.
Teacher Professional Growth
  • Strengthen the culture of professional learning across the Primary School.
  • Support the design and delivery of whole‑school professional development, including coaching, Professional Learning and curriculum‑specific training.
  • Support Curriculum Leaders in developing staff capacity, monitoring performance and addressing underperformance where necessary.
  • Oversee departmental development planning linked to school priorities.
Senior Leadership Team Responsibilities
  • Support strategic leadership for whole‑school safeguarding, health and safety, learning improvement, instructional coaching and professional learning.
  • Positively contribute to leadership team meetings and strategic planning.
  • Support school functions and events, and contribute to marketing and community engagement.
  • Participate in staff recruitment and induction.
  • Collaboratively lead and manage the Staff Review and Development process for academic staff.
  • Deputise for senior colleagues when required.
  • Support colleagues in maintaining the ethos of the School and the highest standards of behaviour.
  • Contribute to parent and community events.
Other Expectations
  • Support the admissions team in academic placement, student profiling and transition.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of School or Principal.
