Job summary

The Mechanical Manager reports to the local project director in Malaysia branch office. Responsibilities include the technical planning, coordination and execution of hydraulic turbine and generator refurbishment projects. Main activities include leadership of mechanical team, ensure compliance with quality and safety standards, and guarantee that all project activities are delivered on time, within budget, and to the applicable technical standards.

This position will be located in Petaling Jaya. Once site operations and subcontractor activities begin, the role might be required to be present at project site in Gerik.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise all mechanical refurbishment activities related to hydropower equipment.
  • Plan, coordinate and monitor works on the turbine and generator components and assemblies, including blasting, welding, surface machining, sealing and corrosion protection.
  • Coordinate with nondestructive testing activities by Quality engineers.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, work instructions, and quality control plans.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources, including engineering, workshop, and field service teams, as well as subcontractors.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE standards during all mechanical operations.
  • Provide technical expertise for inspections, condition assessments, and root cause analyses.
  • Evaluate and optimize repair methods and refurbishment procedures to fulfill requirements regarding reliability, efficiency, and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Prepare technical documentation, progress reports.
  • Collaborate closely with project management, quality assurance, and client representatives on site.
Roles in Execution
  • Establish close collaboration with the Local Engineering Coordinator and project team.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders, e.g. amongst others, customers, consultants, consortia members, suppliers.
  • Handle conflicts and challenges between stakeholders effectively.
Monitoring and Control
  • Track project progress against the plan.
  • Identify potential risks and take timely action to mitigate them.
  • Monitoring of project cost and man hours in terms of Project Budget.
  • Ensure quality standards are met throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to project reviews and evaluations.
  • Contribute regular status reports to local project director.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and best practices for future projects.
Education
  • University degree in engineering or similar.
Skills
  • Several years of experience in hydropower industries.
  • In-depth knowledge of turbine and generator component refurbishment, especially spiral casings, draft tube guide vanes, bearings, generator rotor.
  • Expertise in welding technology, material science, and corrosion protection.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and 3D models.
  • Project management skills and familiarity with tools such as MS Office, SAP, or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; experience managing teams and subcontractors.
  • Willingness to travel internationally and work on‑site at hydropower plants.
