Environmental Campaigner

The Environmental Campaigner will require travel between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia with occasional regional work, to lead the delivery of impactful environmental campaigns with the current workplan focused on forest and environmental governance issues, rooted in community values and public engagement. Act as one of the spokespersons for Greenpeace to help strengthen credibility, visibility, and influence in the forest campaign in Malaysia, translating complex environmental challenges into meaningful action on the ground and at the systemic level.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development and lead the execution of campaign strategies that are deeply rooted in audience research and engagement principles.
  • Focus on crafting campaigns that resonate with the community’s values, encouraging them to experience and recognize the impact of their activism through tangible successes.
  • Report to the Campaign Team Leader (Malaysia) and help design and implement Greenpeace Malaysia’s environmental campaign strategies, supporting the integration of national, regional and international objectives into campaign activities, timelines, and budgets.
  • Lead campaign discussions and the planning, budgeting and implementation of assigned campaign strategies, under the direction of the Campaign Lead.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the relevant technical information related to climate, forest, environmental governance related issues in Malaysia and beyond, and be able to present the information to a variety of audiences within and outside Malaysia.
  • Participate in regular progress reviews and evaluations of the campaign‑related projects and activities, to refine and enhance the reach and effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Work with the Public engagement team to organise and oversee the work of campaign volunteers, interns and external contractors.
  • Collaborate across departments and unit divisions at national and regional levels to support integrated planning, coordinated execution and shared accountability for campaign outcomes.
  • Act as a Greenpeace campaign spokesperson and representative at national and regional public events, building relevance, recognition and trust for the organisation.
  • Build alliances with relevant affected groups, grassroots organisations, academic groups, labour, NGOs etc. to grow the movement and amplify the campaign’s message and successes.
  • Develop pro‑active relationships with media to increase campaign outreach as spokesperson, working with the communication team in preparing media materials relevant including press releases, op‑eds, Q&As, reports and blogs.
  • Keep the line manager informed of progress and activities in the campaign and recommend changes in tactics or strategies if necessary.
  • Respond in a timely manner to and engage in internal as well as pressing external regional challenges as determined by the programme team through the Campaign lead beyond issue/campaign area as circumstances do require.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of political, legislative, regulatory and economic frameworks relevant to the campaign.
Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred fields: Law, Biological Sciences, Forestry, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Communications, or related areas.
Work Experience
  • At least 3 years of experience working on environmental or social justice issues, with demonstrated contributions to policy advocacy and campaigning in Malaysia or the wider Southeast Asia region.
  • Experience related to forest governance, land use, Indigenous rights, or ecosystem protection is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience engaging Indigenous Peoples and/or local communities, with advocacy grounded in lived realities and guided by rights‑based approaches, including Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) where relevant.
  • Experience in strengthening integrated advocacy approaches that connect environmental protection, corporate accountability, protection of vulnerable ecosystems, and broader environmental justice outcomes.
  • While the current workplan focuses on forest‑related campaigning, the role is designed to be adaptable across environmental themes in line with organisational priorities.
