Engineer, Piping (Stress Support)
We are currently based at KL Eco City, Malaysia.
MODEC seeks a Piping Engineer to independently handle piping activities and support the preparation of engineering deliverables for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with technical requirements and timelines with minimal guidance. The role may include short‑term assignments to construction, commissioning, and offshore, where you will collaborate across disciplines to maintain quality and execution efficiency.
You will proactively identify recurring basic engineering issues, develop practical solutions, and help streamline processes to prevent rework. Success in this role requires strong technical fundamentals, clear communication, and a hands‑on, solution‑oriented approach to deliver accurate, timely, and reliable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply standards: Interpret project specs, codes, Class rules, and regulatory requirements to execute piping activities and deliverables.
- Solve problems: Under senior/lead guidance, analyze data and propose options for recurring or less complex issues.
- Develop specs and details: Prepare piping design, stress, pipe support specs, and standard detail drawings using MODEC corporate specs tailored to project needs.
- Define loads: Prepare allowable nozzle loads and stress analysis specifications aligned with project requirements.
- Generate BOMs: Compile bills of materials for piping bulk items, valves, specialties, gaskets, bolting, and supports; provide piping weight inputs for weight control.
- Create line lists: Prepare fabrication line lists derived from the Process Line List.
- Perform stress analysis: Execute flexibility/stress analysis for critical lines across yard, transport, and operating conditions to meet code and project requirements.
- Spring supports: Produce data sheets and details based on stress analysis outputs.
- Conduct surge analysis: Perform surge studies for cargo offloading, seawater lift pumps, and firewater systems; review contractor documents and layout drawings.
- Coordinate supports: Work with contractors to implement flexibility analysis findings for support selection, restraint loads, and special support needs.
- Review isometrics: Verify critical‑line support locations/types against flexibility reports and expected loads.
- Site support: Assist senior piping engineer with technical support to yard construction and commissioning, including off‑site advice when needed.
- Capture lessons learned: Contribute to compiling and processing project lessons learned.

- No resource management: Not responsible for staff resourcing decisions.
- Mentorship: Occasionally mentor and train junior peers, providing guidance to support their career development.
Work Relationships
- Reporting lines: Reports functionally to the piping section lead and operationally to the lead piping engineer for assigned project matters.
- Cross‑discipline coordination: Works closely with the lead piping engineer to coordinate with other disciplines, engineering contractors, and construction/commissioning teams.
- Supplier engagement: Interfaces with suppliers during execution of piping purchase orders.
- Technical focus: Engages extensively on technical and engineering aspects.
- Client interaction: Interfaces with clients where applicable.
- Internal collaboration: Collaborates with internal stakeholders on technical matters.
Job Challenges and Problem‑Solving
