We are seeking a Chief Scientist Officer (CSO) to lead the scientific and technical direction of our graphene and advanced materials initiatives, spanning research, development, validation, and scale-up readiness.
The CSO will be responsible for translating scientific concepts into robust, reproducible, and scalable technologies, working closely with engineering, operations, and management teams. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role, suited to a scientific leader who is comfortable operating in a startup-to-growth environment and bridging the gap between laboratory research and real-world applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee graphene and advanced materials research and applied development, particularly across midstream and downstream activities
- Define and execute the scientific roadmap, ensuring alignment with operational, commercial, and market objectives
- Design, review, and validate experimental methodologies, material characterisation, and performance metrics
- Ensure scientific results are repeatable, defensible, and scalable, supporting transition from laboratory work to pilot and production readiness
- Work closely with engineering and operations teams to support technology transfer, process validation, and scale-up
- Establish and maintain scientific standards, protocols, and documentation to ensure technical quality and integrity
- Provide scientific input to support regulatory readiness, licensing considerations, and compliance requirements related to materials production and scale-up
- Review and endorse technical reports, experimental results, and scientific documentation for internal and external stakeholders
- Represent the company on scientific and technical matters, including engagements with partners, collaborators, and relevant external bodies where required
- Mentor and guide technical team members, fostering a culture of scientific rigor, innovation, and accountability
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
- Strong background in graphene, advanced materials, or nanomaterials research and applications
- 2–5 years of hands-on experience in applied R&D, scale-up, pilot studies, or industrial translation with a PhD
- 5-10 years of hands-on experience in applied R&D, scale-up, pilot studies, or industrial translation without a PhD
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate experimental data into actionable technical decisions
- Experience preparing scientific reports, technical documentation, and presentations
- Familiarity with regulatory, safety, or compliance considerations related to materials production or scale-up is an advantage
- Comfortable operating in a startup-to-growth environment with high ownership, adaptability, and accountability
- This role suits candidates who thrive in startup environments and who can refine, validate, and prepare technologies for scale-up and real-world deployment.
