Job description
Role Description

We are seeking a Chief Scientist Officer (CSO) to lead the scientific and technical direction of our graphene and advanced materials initiatives, spanning research, development, validation, and scale-up readiness.

The CSO will be responsible for translating scientific concepts into robust, reproducible, and scalable technologies, working closely with engineering, operations, and management teams. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role, suited to a scientific leader who is comfortable operating in a startup-to-growth environment and bridging the gap between laboratory research and real-world applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee graphene and advanced materials research and applied development, particularly across midstream and downstream activities
  • Define and execute the scientific roadmap, ensuring alignment with operational, commercial, and market objectives
  • Design, review, and validate experimental methodologies, material characterisation, and performance metrics
  • Ensure scientific results are repeatable, defensible, and scalable, supporting transition from laboratory work to pilot and production readiness
  • Work closely with engineering and operations teams to support technology transfer, process validation, and scale-up
  • Establish and maintain scientific standards, protocols, and documentation to ensure technical quality and integrity
  • Provide scientific input to support regulatory readiness, licensing considerations, and compliance requirements related to materials production and scale-up
  • Review and endorse technical reports, experimental results, and scientific documentation for internal and external stakeholders
  • Represent the company on scientific and technical matters, including engagements with partners, collaborators, and relevant external bodies where required
  • Mentor and guide technical team members, fostering a culture of scientific rigor, innovation, and accountability
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong background in graphene, advanced materials, or nanomaterials research and applications
  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience in applied R&D, scale-up, pilot studies, or industrial translation with a PhD
  • 5-10 years of hands-on experience in applied R&D, scale-up, pilot studies, or industrial translation without a PhD
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate experimental data into actionable technical decisions
  • Experience preparing scientific reports, technical documentation, and presentations
  • Familiarity with regulatory, safety, or compliance considerations related to materials production or scale-up is an advantage
  • Comfortable operating in a startup-to-growth environment with high ownership, adaptability, and accountability
  • This role suits candidates who thrive in startup environments and who can refine, validate, and prepare technologies for scale-up and real-world deployment.
