Job summary

An international educational institution in Selangor is looking for a Boarding Parent to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of students in a boarding environment. Responsibilities include maintaining students' health, contributing to personal care programs, and implementing child safeguarding protocols. The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for working with children. A diploma is preferred but not essential. Candidates with previous boarding or safeguarding experience are highly desirable.

Qualifications

Job description
Responsibilities
  • To maintain the pupils’ health and safety.
  • To contribute to and implement personal care programmes overnight and during the day if applicable.
  • To evacuate the pupils from the building in the event of a fire.
  • To be a full team member, undertaking such housekeeping duties as required (cleaning, laundry and general maintenance).
  • To record events, routine activities as required and incidents using the appropriate documentation and files, and participate in student planning and evaluation as and when appropriate.
  • To commit to training, induction and continuous professional development.
  • To ensure that the Head of Boarding is made aware and kept fully informed of any concerns in relation to safeguarding and/or child protection.
  • To be aware of the School policies and to act in accordance with them.
  • To assist the Boarding Parent with putting the students to bed in an orderly way, ensuring that the students go to bed clean and relaxed.
  • To assist in maintaining discipline in a happy, routine atmosphere.
  • To assist the Boarding Parent once lights are out to ensure that the students settle and go to sleep as quickly as possible.
  • To be available and care for any student who feels unwell, injured or upset during the night or day and be prepared to go to hospital with students, when necessary.
  • To talk to the students at any available moment so as to know them well. To communicate immediately to the Head of Boarding any worries a student may have re work, home, bullying etc.
  • To wake up students in the morning ensuring they are clean and tidy when they present themselves downstairs for the day, ready for school.
  • To assist in laundering of the student’s clothes, towels and bedding.
  • To change sheets and bedding weekly.
  • To change soiled or wet bedding.
  • To tidy and clean the boarding bathrooms, medical sick bays, boarding common rooms and other rooms as required.
  • To mend the students' clothing, if needed.
  • To administer prescribed medication and record in the correct way.
  • Recording in detail, any incidents that may occur.
  • To give First Aid to the students, recording in detail any incident that may occur.
  • To ensure that at all times the medicines are kept out of reach of students and the medicine cabinet is locked at all times.
  • To inform the Nurses of any concerns regarding a students’s health. To accompany to the doctor if necessary and to be with them during their consultation unless it is deemed necessary for the student to be alone with the doctor.
  • Ensure students have all the amenities they need for daily living.
  • To ensure that the student’s beds and dormitories are ready for their arrival at the beginning of term and tidied at the end of term. This will involve working before and after the published term dates. To oversee any laundering and storage of the pupil’s bedding.
  • To ensure that the clothing is cleaned and any necessary mending is undertaken during school holidays.
  • To carry out such other duties as may be required from time to time.
Other responsibilities
  • Be resident in the accommodation provided in the boarding house.
  • Act as a ‘backstop’ when staffing issues arise in the boarding house and/or when other circumstances call for extra duties to be taken on.
  • Be prepared, within reasonable boundaries of expectation, to field queries from parents, pupils and staff about boarding during the school holidays.
Pastoral Care
  • Maintain high standards of personal conduct in the boarding house, in accordance with school policies.
  • Foster a homely, purposeful and safe atmosphere within the house.
  • Induct new boarders and liaise closely with their parents before, during and after their arrival at the school.
  • Be proactive in seeking to forge excellent personal relationships with boarders, their parents and/or carers.
  • Oversee the pastoral and academic welfare of all students in the boarding house and act in loco parentis for boarders during term time.
  • Carry out daytime and evening duties as agreed with the Head of Boarding.
  • Carry out weekend duties, on rotation, as agreed with the Head of Boarding.
Child Safeguarding
  • RGS KL is committed to Safeguarding and Child Protection promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Attend in-house Child Safeguarding programmes.
  • Adhere to all safeguarding protocols.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all students in the school.
  • Report to School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead any concerns they have for the welfare of a student. This may include unsafe practices witnessed within the school as outlined in the school’s Whistleblowing Policy.
  • Keep professional relationships with students where personal boundaries are respected and maintained.
  • Seek advice from the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead with issues or concerns related to Child Safeguarding.
  • Ensure vendors, suppliers and visitors adhere to safeguarding guidelines, especially if they have access to the premises or interact with students,
Working conditions
  • Live in the house 7 days a week
  • Works6 days a week (with a mid week day off)
  • Be available on the mobile telephone while on duty.

Boarding Parent Job Description
  • Diploma qualification in any studies/field preferred but not essential.

  • Able to start asap (16-Aug-2025).
  • Experience in boarding / working with children.
  • Experience in a Safeguarding role.
  • Ability to speak Chinese.
  • Previous pastoral care experience / experience working in a school.
  • A first-aid qualification would be useful but training can be provided by school.
