Assistant Manager, Corporate Legal Unit, Chancery

Job Description
  • Provide comprehensive legal advice and guidance on matters affecting the University, including contracts, partnerships, procurement, student affairs, and employment-related issues.
  • Manage and coordinate the review, negotiation, and execution of contracts related to academic collaborations, consultancy engagements, tenancy agreements, and procurement activities.
  • Support the Senior Manager in managing legal disputes, investigations, and litigation matters involving the University, including liaising with external counsel where necessary.
  • Advise on a wide range of legal matters, including contractual arrangements, transactions, and dispute resolution.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of legal and governance frameworks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and policies to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide legal support to board-level and management committees, including the preparation, review, and vetting of board papers with legal implications.
  • Conduct internal legal awareness programmes, briefings, and training sessions for UniKL staff on compliance, contractual obligations, and risk mitigation matters.
Requirements
  • Minimum a Bachelor Degree in Human Resource / Business Studies / Administration / Management / Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from a recognized university. A postgraduate qualification such as a Master of Laws (LL.M), Master of Business Administration (MBA), or a related discipline will be an added advantage.
  • Called to the Bar and admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
  • Membership with a recognized legal or corporate governance professional body (e.g. Malaysian Bar, MAICSA, ICSA, or equivalent) will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant working experience in legal practice or as in-house counsel, with at least three (3) years in a managerial or supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Malaysian laws and the regulatory framework, particularly in education, corporate, and administrative law.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking capabilities, with proven leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent legal drafting, analytical, and research skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication as well as negotiation skills in both Bahasa Malaysia and English.
  • Proven ability to manage a legal team and to liaise effectively with key stakeholders, including government agencies, external legal counsel, and internal departments.
