There are development opportunities that support career progression within health visiting. We have a number of Band 7 posts that can be considered alongside either clinical or management development.
BCHC also supports practitioners who have been out of practice for a while, and offers a Return to Practice framework; all of the above can be discussed at interview.
Responsibilities
- Consistently demonstrate the BCHC Trust Values and the Cs of nursing – commitment, competence, courage, communication, compassion, and care – in all relationships with families, colleagues and partner professionals; develop a workload profile identifying groups within the population with specific health needs.
- Work closely with the primary health care team, participating in activities that address the health needs of general practice, families using local children’s centres, early education clusters, and other health partners.
- Deliver the Health Child Programme through compassionate assessment, analysis of need, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care using assessment tools in line with the commissioner service specification for the health visiting service; use the common assessment framework to assess and plan with families where multi-agency partnership working is required.
- Formulate and agree packages of care with families, open and actively manage health and wellbeing files, monitor all open files in accordance with the records‑keeping policy, and close files when the package of care is complete.
- Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities; meet and report on agreed key performance indicators where appropriate.
- Give evidence‑based advice on health issues to members of the local population in a way that promotes behavioural change and builds on strengths.
- Work to current NICE guidelines on antenatal and postnatal mental health to identify, support and refer women at risk of postnatal depression, including those who are mild to moderately depressed.
- Maintain quality standards of care using audit and other monitoring systems to evaluate the service.
- Identify vulnerable children in need of protection and refer to Social Care and Health following Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board policies in all cases of suspected or actual emotional, physical, sexual abuse and neglect; follow up domestic violence notifications in line with Trust policy.
- Attend team meetings around family meetings and case conferences, undertaking and fulfilling responsibilities appropriate to the role of the Health Visitor as agreed in the multi‑agency child protection plan.
- Plan and arrange appointments for clinics and home visits in partnership with families.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with families, primary healthcare teams and other professionals in statutory and voluntary organisations.
- Ensure all equipment used by professionals in clinic settings is maintained and fit for purpose; order equipment for client use as identified following a health care assessment and advise on safe fitting and appropriate use.
- Promote and support immunisation programmes offered nationally to service users.
- Enter all data required on the data collection system accurately and on time according to Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust policy.
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings including multi‑agency steering groups, taking responsibility for completion of tasks arising from such meetings (e.g., providing input into policy development and standard setting within the Health Visitor remit).
- Ensure all written records are kept to the required NMC standard, write letters of referral to other services, and produce complex reports for court hearings relating to child protection.
- Deal with and support families through difficult family situations such as illness, domestic violence, bereavement and child protection.
- Manage a caseload, including electronic recording, data inputting and report generation.
- Provide professional advice on Health Visiting issues and promote an understanding of health needs among other agencies.
- Supervise, mentor and assess pre‑registration student nurses on placement with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust where appropriate; provide mentoring for other healthcare students, including health visitor students.
- Access safeguarding, caseload and clinical supervision to ensure a resilient workforce that prioritises safe, compassionate care.
- Participate in nurse prescribing, undertaking a full assessment of minor conditions appropriate to the Health Visitor role; prescribe from the formulary where indicated and access continuing professional development in prescribing.
- Convey complex information to other professionals and clients, working with them in difficult circumstances such as child protection, terminal illness or bereavement.
- Plan, organise and run clinics and groups.

- Ensure supportive staff management arrangements are in place; carry out personal development reviews for direct reports and ensure all staff have annual PDRs resulting in specific objectives and effective personal development plans.
- Develop staff knowledge and skills to promote equality and diversity and address inequalities in employment and service delivery; ensure specific equality objectives are included in PDRs.
- Develop a culture that ensures the standards of Improving Working Lives and Investors in People are achieved and maintained for all staff and that staff perceptions about their working lives are measured and improvements made.

Qualification Essential
- Registered First Level Nurse Health Visitor Certificate/Diploma/Degree
- Evidence of recent professional development
Skills/Knowledge Essential
- Knowledge of evidence‑based approaches in the provision of the Healthy Child Programme
- Evidence of assessment and care planning skills
- Ability to facilitate the learning of others in one‑to‑one or group settings
- Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up‑to‑date evidence base for the Healthy Child Programme, including the 6 high‑impact areas for 0‑5s
- Ability to demonstrate written skills that are relevant, accurate, concise and legible
- Ability to work in a supervisory capacity
- Ability to use software packages as appropriate
