Staff Nurse - Kenyon Ward

The closing date is 14 October 2025

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Kenyon Ward, nursing up to 22 patients who have undergone complex surgery, and are therefore looking for an individual who will thrive in supporting a team who are caring for patients with complex orthopaedic needs and are able to adapt to work quickly in the event of patient deterioration.

Good knowledge of central venous devices and their management would be advantageous, although not essential as training can be offered.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a Registered Nurse (General) with good communication skills, the ability to assist with change and the drive to improve and develop clinical practice. They will need to be a motivated and confident individual who also shows initiative, is a team player, flexible and reliable to meet the demands of the service, and able to demonstrate consistently high standards of work.

Please note that we have no access to OSCE support courses, and nurses pending registration are welcome to apply but must be able to evidence that they have satisfied the NMC Objective Structured Clinical Examination Test of Competence

Job responsibilities

Under the direction of the Ward/department manager, the post holder is responsible for providing skilled, high-quality nursing care within a multidisciplinary environment to ensure individualised and effective care is practiced.

Contribute to the continuity of good team spirit and high standards of nursing care. Empower junior staff to develop the highest possible level of clinical skills and facilitate communication within all care groups.

Utilise ward/department resources to promote excellence in practice and address quality issues relevant to service delivery.

Professional and Clinical issues

Be accountable and responsible for maintaining own nursing practice and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.

Be responsible for the delivery of patient-centered care, maintaining own specialist knowledge and clinical skills, participating in direct patient care and upholding evidence of PREP standards as required by the NMC. The post holder must demonstrate highly developed dexterous skills during clinical practice and the capability to manage periods of moderate physical effort during the shift worked.

Assist ward staff in providing clinical and professional advice, expertise and support, developing practice and monitoring performance.

Keep abreast of current NHS political issues and future nursing trends.

Provide leadership to all staff, promoting a culture of positive and effective teamwork. Assess care required, request medical input as necessary, and devise appropriate care programmes for the patient, implementing and evaluating care during admission and in preparation for safe discharge. Supported by written evidence.

Provide a high standard of nursing care based on assessment of care needs in consultation with the patient, relatives and multidisciplinary team.

Continuously evaluate the quality of care, regularly reassess patient needs in consultation with patient and team to effect changes to achieve planned goals.

Liaise with other professionals to ensure cohesive patient care.

Formulate well-planned discharges with appropriate follow-up, ensuring effective liaison with family, Allied Health Professionals and community services.

Ensure a patient-focused approach to care and due regard to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of the patient, family, carers and staff.

Uphold the Trust's Diversity/Equal Opportunities Policy and ensure safety of patients’ belongings.

Provide and receive complex or sensitive information about patients, and handle confrontation by reassuring, calming and defusing situations.

Advise on issues within own scope of practice related to health promotion and MECC.

Identify learning needs of patients, relatives and staff, and plan and implement education to meet those needs.

Facilitate and maintain patient records to ensure information is accurate and up to date for future reference, complying with Data Protection Act and NMC Patient Record Keeping Guidelines.

Prepare care plans to ensure effective patient care.

Manage time effectively to ensure patients are ready for planned procedures and staff receive adequate breaks.

Ensure safe delivery of medicines by prescribed route in line with national and Trust guidelines.

Assist ward staff to ensure ward areas meet risk management standards, working with all healthcare professionals.

Ability to use and recharge intravenous drug administration pumps, recognize early signs of drug reaction, and take appropriate steps.

Frequent patient care requiring physical effort to roll, manoeuvre and stand patients. Use of ward manual handling equipment is essential to reduce physical strain and maintain safety. Annual manual handling training is mandatory.

Frequent handling of waste body fluids and correct disposal.

Participate in yearly appraisal, setting personal objectives for professional development and completing statutory training to ensure adherence to Trust policy and current legislation.

Attend relevant in-house training sessions pertinent to clinical practice to enhance knowledge and skill, maintaining competencies.

Staff Management

Provide leadership for nursing, ward clerks and housekeeper team and act as a role model. Act as a resource adviser for junior colleagues in the delivery of nursing care. Ensure staff wear identity cards and adhere to uniform policy. Assist in creating a good working atmosphere.

Quality Management

Maintain a working environment that promotes health and safety of patients, staff and visitors. Responsible for safe manual handling and for maintaining a high quality service by continual development in practice, aligned with evidence and standards in National service frameworks, NICE and clinical guidance. Act as patient advocate within the clinical specialty and promote evidence-based care.

Ensure adherence to Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and current legislation, particularly health and safety procedures. Respond to patients and relatives concerns at ward level and refer to Ward/Department Manager or Nurse in Charge as appropriate. Assist in audit/review of the quality and availability of patient information.

Communication

Ensure effective communication among clinicians, allied health professionals, patients and relatives. Maintain good interpersonal relationships, provide health promotion advice, maintain confidentiality and work closely with the multidisciplinary team. Ensure continuous communication for assessment and reporting of patient care and activity over a shift. Handle complex or sensitive information, defuse difficult situations, and communicate with relatives and staff; provide telephone advice as needed and record in a telephone advice book.

Persuade patients to cooperate with prescribed treatments and care; communicate with patients with special needs where nonverbal communication is essential. Act as a resource for nursing and allied health professionals in delivery of care.

Respond to telephone enquiries with clinical judgment and refer to appropriate personnel.

Resource Management

Seek to optimise use of resources and control expenditure. Develop knowledge of P.A.S., E.P.R Bluespier and the Trust intranet. Ensure best use of beds by communicating with colleagues within the Trust and referring hospitals/outside agencies. Perform any job-related duties assigned by line manager.
