Position Overview:

This posting is for a Sr. Vegetation & Wetland Ecologist / Discipline Lead who will be an integral part of the growing AJM team. The successful candidate may be responsible for leading the design, planning, and implementation of vegetation and wetland field programs including: managing wetland delineation and classifications, wetland monitoring, preparation of Wetland Assessment and Impact Forms, and Wetland Assessment and Impact Reports, vegetation inventories, ecosite classifications, rangeland health assessments, and rare plant surveys. Supporting other bio-physical disciplines may also be a reality of this role.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Full-scale project management including field program design, budgeting, scheduling, accurate invoicing, field execution, issue management and final deliverables;
  2. Conduct wetland assessments, vegetation inventories, soil assessments, and rare plant surveys in a safe, technically defensible, and efficient manner;
  3. Provide technical vegetation and wetlands support to multi-disciplinary projects;
  4. Manage field crews and take ownership of crew safety including leading by example and mentoring junior staff on safety;
  5. Provide mentorship to junior staff while in field and office, passing on lessons learned and supporting in the development of their technical and non-technical skills;
  6. Analyze or supervise field data to develop management and mitigation recommendations;
  7. Write clearly and succinctly to convey environmental considerations and results to clients;
  8. Develop regulatory applications and liaise between regulators and clients when necessary;
  9. Serve as a primary client contact, providing expert recommendations and fostering long-term relationships;
  10. Identify and pursue business development opportunities through formal (e.g., proposal writing) and informal (e.g., networking events) avenues;
  11. Maintain technical skills through formal and on-the-job opportunities;
  12. Work independently, often outside of office hours, to meet challenging deadlines and client requests.

Specific Skills and Requirements:

  1. Minimum of B.Sc. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline, or a relevant technical diploma/post-graduate degree with work experience;
  2. Registered (or ability to register) as a Professional Biologist or Professional Agrologist in Alberta and/or BC;
  3. Minimum of ten years of relevant industry environmental experience, consulting experience preferred;
  4. Expert field identification and assessment skills, including wetland delineations and classifications; vegetation inventories, and rare plant surveys, and a desire to continue to learn;
  5. Experience with GIS software;
  6. A self-starter who thrives in a demanding environment working both as part of a team and independently, and a willingness to go the extra mile;
  7. Great communication skills and strong technical writing skills;
  8. Experience providing guidance to management and/or operations personnel;
  9. Existing applicable technical and safety training certifications will be considered an asset;
  10. Ability to learn new technology (and have fun while doing so!);
  11. Working knowledge of relevant provincial and federal legislation and policies;
  12. Experience providing guidance, mentorship and support to junior staff;
  13. A desire to get hands dirty in the field and an ability to work remotely for extended periods;
  14. Ability to prioritize competing initiatives, anticipate potential problems and deal with ambiguity;
  15. A solid track record of fostering a strong health and safety culture;
  16. A valid class 5 driver’s license, a clean driving record and minimum 3 years auto insurance history;
  17. Excellent organizational skills and a strong sense of accountability;
  18. A cultural ambassador who can model AJM’s core values in all aspects of the role;
  19. An entrepreneurial spirit.

Safety Requirement:

This role is considered safety-sensitive and will require the submission of a drivers abstract and a claims experience letter for proof of driving history, as well as the successful completion of drug screenings at various times during employment.
