Title: Junior Software Developer

Location: Calgary, Canada (2 days onsite per week)

Summary

We require a junior motivated GIS developer to script, develop and automate spatial data processes. Candidates should have a knowledge and experience with ESRI and open source tools and technologies such as ESRI ArcGIS Desktop or Pro, QGIS, ArcGIS Enterprise, and Oracle, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server databases. ETL products such as FME or GDAL is highly desirable. Other open source GIS technologies will also be considered. Experience with Python, C# or other software development languages is required. Experience in AWS or other cloud platforms is also a plus.

General Job Duties
  • Work with spatial delivery and map services team to understand the needs of the business and automate processes through application of technologies, systems, and process changes.
  • Conducting process reviews and develop automation solutions which are highly sustainable and value addition to the business.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Stays current with rapidly changing technology, applying it to business needs.
  • Highly detail oriented and organized.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Specific Job Duties

As part of a project team to develop and deliver internal process-automation systems, this position will work under the guidance of the Spatial Delivery Team. Candidates are expected to be able to perform scripting and development work using various development languages such as Python, C#, Powershell or Bash. An appreciation of Project Management Methodologies (especially Agile) and their practice is therefore important.

The systems include spatial data maintenance, spatial validation and spatial data distribution processes as well as data conversion, coordinate transformation, mapping and general maintenance of internal spatial data structures.

Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Help to further automate delivery reports to track data access and usage
  • Help to create efficiencies, automation and build AI capabilities related to customer subscriptions within our system, facilitating seamless access to necessary data for users
  • Support the management of secured account requests, ensuring that all requests align with established guidelines and security protocols
  • Collaborate with technical teams to troubleshoot and resolve access issues, enhancing user experience and data availability
  • Provide support in the automation of these processes to improve efficiency and accuracy during the transition period
Required Technical Skills
  • Strong Knowledge and Experience of ESRI technology (ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Pro and ArcSDE).
  • Knowledge/ Experience of C# or Python with ArcPy.
  • Knowledge of databases (RDBMS) and database concepts/design.
  • Knowledge/Experience with Coordinate Systems Transformations and Projections handling implementations of industry standards such as EPSG and WKT.
  • Knowledge of FME & FME Server (useful but not essential).
  • Knowledge of Oracle SQL and Esri ST_Geometry (useful but not essential).
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux environments (useful but not essential).
Optional Technical Skills
  • Knowledge/Experience with open source GIS software.
  • Knowledge/Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge/Experience with PostGIS or other native geometry types.
  • Knowledge/Experience with cloud warehouses such as Snowflake/Databricks.
Education/Experience Requirements
  • Bachelors in Computer Science, related field or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge in Esri, and working knowledge of related programming languages.
Organizational Relationships
  • Reports directly to Development Manager.
  • Interacts with other colleagues at all levels.
