Job description

The Role

The HSE & Safeguarding Officer will be a crucial member of the Health and Safety department, responsible for strategising, planning, and executing day-to-day HSE operations. You will support in leading functions within the team and collaborate with faculty and other professional services departments.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Implement and maintain all HSE documentation and procedures.
  • Maintain and improve safe campus performance to implement better HSE outcomes.
  • Conduct site fire, risk, and operational audits.
  • Coordinate with external agencies and organise HSE-related training.
  • Prepare the Method Statement and Risk Assessment for all new projects.
  • Conduct Health and Safety Induction for new staff members/students.
  • Lead campus incident investigations and resolutions for issues.
  • Maintain safety culture and ensure the Middlesex HSE plan is implemented.
  • Inspect the campus and prepare reports.
  • Report all accidents/incidents.
  • Induce a safety culture among staff and students.
  • Escalate safety violations and non-compliance.
  • Ensure safety plan implementation on campus.
  • Collaborate with Academic Faculties and Professional Services Staff to ensure a high level of Health and Safety working environment.
  • Be committed to and promote safeguarding students and staff, ensuring the best student experience.
  • Support the continued implementation and development of the University Care and Concern and Safeguarding framework and related policies/procedures.
  • Act as the first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns, providing timely, relevant support and advice to safeguard students and other members of the University community.
  • Keep informed of current legislation, statutory guidance regarding safeguarding, and cascade information to staff and the broader community.
  • Liaise with multiple University departments for ongoing monitoring and support for students with safeguarding concerns.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with relevant statutory, voluntary, and community agencies.
  • Attend internal safeguarding-related meetings and external training/professional networking opportunities to learn best practices.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate, confidential records and monitor regular, accurate data on safeguarding incidents and outcomes.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the grade as appropriate.
Requirements

Post Holder Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience, preferably in an educational environment.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Electrical/Mechanical, or related Engineering field.
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices and a good understanding of writing reports and policies for health and safety.
  • Diligent with great attention to detail and good organisational skills.
  • Any occupational health and safety certification is advantageous (i.e., NEBOSH).
  • Proficient in MS Office; working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus.
  • Good awareness of quality and safety procedures.
  • Proven track record of working with complex issues of a difficult and sensitive nature.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
