The Senior Structural Engineer (Pre-Contract) provides technical expertise during the tendering and design development stages of projects. This role ensures that structural designs are safe, compliant, cost-effective, and aligned with client requirements before contract award. The position also involves direct liaison with Chinese-speaking clients to ensure smooth communication and understanding of project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Technical Review
- Evaluate preliminary structural designs, drawings, and specifications for feasibility and compliance with codes and standards.
- Provide value engineering input to optimize structural systems for cost, constructability, and sustainability.
- Coordinate with architects, M&E engineers, and other disciplines to resolve design interfaces.
- Review tender documents, drawings, and specifications to identify risks, ambiguities, and opportunities.
- Prepare technical clarifications, queries, and alternative proposals for submission during tender.
- Support bid teams with structural engineering input, including methodology, construction sequencing, and material selection.
- Work closely with the QS/estimating team to provide structural quantities, material take-offs, and technical cost inputs.
- Assess potential design risks and propose mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with local authority requirements and project-specific standards.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with consultants, clients, and internal teams to clarify structural requirements.
- Present technical solutions and design alternatives to management and clients.
- Support negotiations by providing technical justifications for design choices.
- Communicate effectively with Chinese-speaking clients to ensure clarity and alignment on project expectations.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE/Chartered Engineer) status preferred.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in structural engineering, with at least 3–5 years in pre-contract/tender stage roles.
- Strong knowledge of international and local building codes (Eurocode, BS, ACI, etc.).
- Proficiency in structural analysis software (ETABS, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Tekla).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple tenders simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Mandarin is an added advantage, particularly for liaising with Chinese-speaking clients.
