Principal Consultant-Technical Risk and Safety

This is an excellent career opportunity to work with an expert consulting team on challenging safety and risk projects for large global clients. The principal goals are to fulfill a leadership role with an accountability for team performance (technical, financial, health and safety, career development), growth in line with ERM's key strategy and identification and winning approvals / projects.

You will work closely with Partners-In Charge on various risk management projects and at the same time have access to ERM's international risk management experts who provide knowledge sharing of best practices across the industry and ongoing learning opportunities for the team.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the Safety & Risk team in Malaysia, responsible for:
  • People Management:
    • Develop a technically strong team and oversee continuous improvement through mentoring and assisting with practice networks.
    • Improve or maintain staff development, training, engagement and retention.
    • Improve collaboration opportunities across Business Unit practices and show personal involvement in regional practices.
    • Create a culture around H&S that leads to incident‑free operations.
    • Assist Leadership team in mentoring future Safety & Risk consultants.
  • Business Development and Client Management, in relation to ERM's Safety & Risk Services offering and calibrating and executing a business strategy aimed to grow ERM's work in this area.
  • Project Management of complex technical work & inter‑disciplinary work to international standards and deliver commitments to clients and ERM team members.
  • Technical Guidance: as Technical Reviewer of project deliverables and provide sound technical inputs to align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements. Keep up to date with regulations in Malaysia and international standards.
ADDITIONAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Provide technical expertise to Risk & Safety projects.
  • Manage hazard and risk assessments for oil & gas exploration, production, midstream, refining, distribution and retail facilities through formal safety assessments and safety case development.
  • Perform detailed risk studies and robust technically sound analysis based on reasoned argument and defensible data. Typical studies include:
    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
    • Hazard Identification (HAZID)
    • Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP)
    • Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) methods
    • Bow‑Tie Diagramming (prevention/recovery analysis)
    • Consequence Modelling
    • Safety Integrity Level (SIL) studies
  • Recommend improvement/changes to design to reduce risk and improve client operations.
  • Manage preparation and facilitate safety workshops (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, ALARP) with timely client reporting.
  • Manage safety cases, including developing facility description, safety, management system description and formal safety assessment summaries.
  • Prepare high‑quality reports with clear diagrams and fully explained analysis and calculations.
  • Develop and expand client relationships that generate repeat business to grow the Risk practice.
  • Prepare technical proposals and participate in business development with existing and new clients.
  • Appropriately delegate project assignments and mentor junior staff to become world‑class consultants.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor or Master's Degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Process Engineering or related engineering.
  • 15+ years' experience in safety risk engineering, preferably in oil & gas, chemical or high‑tech sectors.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills; experience writing comprehensive technical reports.
  • Familiarity with HSE cases and supporting safety studies; gained through hands‑on development or roles requiring such familiarity.
  • Business acumen to understand business risk and challenges, and recognize corporate opportunities.
  • Demonstrable track record in delivering sales results annually, including successfully winning large and strategic projects.
  • Proven experience mentoring and growing a team of consultants.
  • Excellent English language skills, both spoken and written.
