Manager Underwriting – Commercial Lines (Property Classes)

Support the Section Head in managing Property classes, including business strategy development, execution, and portfolio performance. The role carries P&L ownership for the Property class and ensures underwriting discipline aligned with business objectives.

The key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Demonstrate strong understanding and clear articulation of treaty terms and conditions.
  • Support the Section Head in developing and executing business strategies for the Property class.
  • Own and take accountability for the Property class P&L and underwriting portfolio performance.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and mentorship to junior underwriters.
  • Support and drive underwriting and product strategies aligned with overall business objectives, local market conditions, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support trading strategies to position the company competitively while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Make underwriting decisions and take ownership of the assigned portfolio.
  • Leverage technical expertise to mentor the team and ensure competitiveness and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide expert guidance to enhance risk management and improve portfolio profitability.
  • Work closely with the Section Head to ensure a balanced portfolio and long-term profitability.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, brokers, clients, and local market partners.
  • Ensure operational excellence, including process optimization, governance, compliance, and risk management (e.g. sanctions screening, underwriting filings, policy issuance).
  • Liaise with treaty reinsurers on risks exceeding the company’s underwriting authority for approval and acceptance.
  • Review and update underwriting rules and guidelines for the assigned portfolio.
  • Underwrite and analyze risks in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Assist the Section Head in internal and external audits, as well as reporting requirements.
Job Specification:
  • Degree in Insurance or related field.
  • Preferably with CAII/AAII (CMII/AMII) qualification.
  • Minimum 8 – 10 years of relevant experience in Property insurance underwriting.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability with the ability to guide and motivate team members.
  • Strong drive for professional excellence.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
