Manager Underwriting – Commercial Lines (Property Classes)
Support the Section Head in managing Property classes, including business strategy development, execution, and portfolio performance. The role carries P&L ownership for the Property class and ensures underwriting discipline aligned with business objectives.
The key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrate strong understanding and clear articulation of treaty terms and conditions.
- Support the Section Head in developing and executing business strategies for the Property class.
- Own and take accountability for the Property class P&L and underwriting portfolio performance.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and mentorship to junior underwriters.
- Support and drive underwriting and product strategies aligned with overall business objectives, local market conditions, and regulatory requirements.
- Support trading strategies to position the company competitively while maintaining underwriting discipline.
- Make underwriting decisions and take ownership of the assigned portfolio.
- Leverage technical expertise to mentor the team and ensure competitiveness and regulatory compliance.
- Provide expert guidance to enhance risk management and improve portfolio profitability.
- Work closely with the Section Head to ensure a balanced portfolio and long-term profitability.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, brokers, clients, and local market partners.
- Ensure operational excellence, including process optimization, governance, compliance, and risk management (e.g. sanctions screening, underwriting filings, policy issuance).
- Liaise with treaty reinsurers on risks exceeding the company’s underwriting authority for approval and acceptance.
- Review and update underwriting rules and guidelines for the assigned portfolio.
- Underwrite and analyze risks in accordance with company guidelines.
- Assist the Section Head in internal and external audits, as well as reporting requirements.
Job Specification:
- Degree in Insurance or related field.
- Preferably with CAII/AAII (CMII/AMII) qualification.
- Minimum 8 – 10 years of relevant experience in Property insurance underwriting.
- Strong technical, analytical, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership capability with the ability to guide and motivate team members.
- Strong drive for professional excellence.
- Proficient in spoken and written English.
- Self-motivated with a positive attitude and able to work independently.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
