A leading insurance firm in Kuala Lumpur is seeking a Legal & Regulatory Affairs Manager to ensure compliance and manage governmental relations. This role requires a minimum of 5 years in corporate or financial services and strong negotiation skills. The ideal candidate will have experience with regulators and a background in law. You will lead regulatory initiatives and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive strategic business growth. This position offers a pivotal role in supporting the company's governance frameworks.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in corporate/insurance/financial services and regulatory affairs or compliance.
  • Experience in Bank Negara Malaysia or interfacing with regulators or government stakeholders strongly preferred.
  • Experience in recognised international or Malaysian law firm or in-house legal & compliance role preferred.

  • Represent the company in engagements with regulators, government bodies, and industry associations.
  • Establish, implement and continuously improve compliance frameworks, regulatory controls, and reporting processes.
  • Provide guidance to commercial counsel on commercial contracts, partnerships, and distribution agreements.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As our Legal & Regulatory Affairs Manager, you will play a pivotal strategic role — ensuring we remain compliant, commercially sound, and well-positioned within the government and regulatory landscape. You will lead and strengthen the legal function, drive government and regulatory affairs initiatives, and ensure our governance frameworks enable sustainable business growth.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Government & Regulatory Affairs
    • Represent the company in engagements with regulators, government bodies, and industry associations
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with relevant public‑sector stakeholders
    • Support applications, approvals, licensing and regulatory submissions for both Malaysia and cross‑border operations
    • Monitor and interpret regulatory changes in insurance/financial services and translate them into actionable guidance
  • Compliance & Risk Management
    • Establish, implement and continuously improve compliance frameworks, regulatory controls, and reporting processes
    • Identify legal, governance and compliance risks across the business and recommend mitigation strategies
    • Ensure company policies and practices adhere to applicable laws and industry standards
  • Commercial & Legal Advisory
    • Provide guidance to commercial counsel on commercial contracts, partnerships, distribution agreements, and new product launches
    • Ensure documents reflect both strong commercial terms and compliance with legal obligations
    • Lead negotiations on key commercial matters with internal and external stakeholders
    • Resolve legacy, liability, and operational legal issues efficiently
  • Leadership & Collaboration
    • Lead and mentor the commercial counsel and support their professional development
    • Work closely with cross‑functional business teams (Product, Underwriting, Ops, Tech, People, Finance)
    • Contribute to strategic initiatives, operational excellence, and continuous improvement
    • Influence high‑quality decision‑making grounded in risk awareness and business value
WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in corporate/insurance/financial services and regulatory affairs or compliance
  • Experience in Bank Negara Malaysia or interfacing with regulators or government stakeholders strongly preferred
  • Experience in recognised international or Malaysian law firm or in‑house legal & compliance role preferred
  • LLB or equivalent from a common law jurisdiction
  • Strong commercial acumen with excellent negotiation and drafting skills
  • Confident communicator — able to influence and build trust with senior stakeholders
  • Self‑starter with strong ownership, integrity, and pragmatic problem‑solving
  • Familiarity with insurance/insurtech/financial services regulation is a distinct advantage
