Job description
About the firm

At January Capital, we look to invest in technology businesses that will power growth in the Asia-Pacific region over the next decade. We are committed to investing in founders who challenge the status quo. We’re inspired by those individuals who are willing to dedicate themselves to solve some of the region’s biggest challenges. We manage more than $400 million on behalf of our investors (our investors comprise leading institutions, corporations, families, and high net worth individuals). Our portfolio includes Akulaku, Shopback, Skedulo, Go1, Cyble, Cialfo, Tazapay, and others.

About the role

We are experiencing an period of growth across the firm as we look to invest in and support the most ambitious founders in the Asia-Pacific region. To continue this trajectory, we are now searching for a driven individual to work with one of our senior investment professionals at the firm in a full life-cycle role. This role straddles investing, portfolio management and firm strategy. It will be based in Kuala Lumpur, where we are expanding our team.

This hire will be a full-time member of the January Capital investment team. You will learn as an "apprentice" how to be a lifecycle investor. This includes assisting with identification and execution of new investment opportunities, as well as working closely to drive initiatives post-investment across their portfolio (i.e., attending board meetings and actively support portfolio companies on critical projects).

We are looking for a bright, extremely motivated and talented individual. Most importantly, we are looking for people with grit and an attitude that means they will pitch in where needed (noting that while this role is primarily focused on investments, it will involve non-investment related work, particularly in the first 12-18 months). The ideal candidate will also have a strong interest in enterprise and B2B technologies. You will have the ability to be part of a collegial, tight knit, and energetic investment team.

Role responsibilities

  • Assist one of the firm\'s senior investment professionals in progressing investment opportunities in January Capital\'s core thematic focus areas - these are typically in the Enterprise / B2B software landscape.

  • Be a champion for systems and processes. Improve current processes and coordinate organizational procedures for optimized efficiency and productivity alongside senior management.

  • Conduct due diligence on potential investments, including investment memo drafting, market analysis, customer feedback, mapping industry landscapes, and financial modelling.

  • Support oversight of existing portfolio companies by providing strategic guidance, introductions to potential customers and partners, and other value-add activities.

  • Help to manage the Managing Partner\'s investment pipeline (including sourcing new opportunities, where required).

  • Participate in firm-building activities that will help position January Capital as the leading early-stage investment firm in the Asia-Pacific region.

What we’re looking for

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree from a well-regarded tertiary institution, in a technical or analytical discipline (i.e., Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Maths, Physics, or a related field). Post-graduate qualifications in these disciplines will be viewed favorably.

  • Work experience of 2-4 years in either of the following role types: (i) founder-level role at an early-stage company (or early employee), (ii) product management, growth, or software engineering role at a startup or technology company, (iii) tier-one consulting / corporate strategy role with a focus on enterprise software, (iv) experience in venture capital / corporate development / private equity with specific transactional software experience

  • Previous experience that will allow you to quickly grasp complex software concepts within a short amount of time.

  • Ability to think creatively and identify new investment opportunities in emerging technologies and business models. Deep passion for technology and a desire to build a meaningful network in the Asia-Pacific venture ecosystem will be essential.

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with experience conducting due diligence viewed favorably. Developed analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.

  • An ability to move fast and learn quickly, juggle a long list of priorities, work autonomously and implement processes and procedures all without comprising attention to detail.
