About Network School
You’re probably here because you’re following @balajis and have an interest in network states. If so, great! You’ve found your way to the back of the house, the application to become part of the Network School Core Team.
But what exactly is the Network School? The detailed version is here, but the short version can be expressed in three bullets:
- First, the Network School is a school for the dark talent. We recruit founders from around the world to build tech companies, digital currencies, and internet communities.
- Second, the Network School is a startup society that itself bootstraps startup societies. We host digital nomads and remote workers, online creators and open source developers, all of whom want to join our new society and help build other new societies from the ground up.
- Finally, the Network School is a nascent alternative to Stanford and to San Francisco. Those places were great in their day, but they’ve declined. And so we need new locales built from the ground up to be neutral Tech Switzerlands, with the right balance of internationalism and capitalism.
About You
We’re looking for a Finance Controller who is willing to relocate to the Network School campus, which is located right outside sunny Singapore.
In terms of who we’re looking for, we want finance-first pragmatists with a sense of balance. You understand finance but also start-ups. You care about precision in the numbers, but you also understand the realities of a fast-moving startup society where things are evolving week to week.
You are extremely detail oriented and organised. You like closing the books, producing clean management accounts, and making sure every transaction is properly recorded and reconciled. You enjoy taking chaos (multiple entities, multiple currencies, multiple systems) and turning it into a single source of truth that an auditor, a regulator, or a founder can all rely on.
In terms of specific skills, we expect you to have the following:
- Qualification: A formal accounting qualification is a must (e.g. CA, CPA, ACCA or equivalent).
- Accounting Standards: Strong working knowledge of IFRS, including revenue recognition, capitalisation vs expensing, and consolidation.
- Tools: Proficiency with modern accounting systems (e.g. Xero), Excel/Sheets at an advanced level (pivot tables, lookups, basic modelling), and comfort integrating with other systems (payment processors, banks, payroll, etc).
- Core Accounting: Month-end and year-end close, Reconciliations across multiple data sources, Preparation of Management accounts, Statutory accounts support, Audit preparation and file management.
- Controls & Compliance: Experience setting up and operating financial controls, approval workflows, and documentation that can withstand due diligence and external audits.
- Nice to Have: Experience with crypto/web3 accounting (wallet reconciliations, token/fiat flows, exchange accounts), multi-entity/multi-currency structures, and working with venture-backed or high-growth companies.
Most importantly, you’ve actually run the numbers before. Maybe you’ve taken a company from “shoebox of receipts” to clean monthly management accounts. Maybe you’ve led an annual audit from start to finish. Maybe you’ve built a chart of accounts and control environment that survived Big‑4 due diligence. Whatever it is, you’ve owned a finance function at a deep, hands‑on level. Tell us about it below.
What You'll Do
You’ll be the owner of historical financial truth at the Network School.
Concretely, that means you will:
Own Month-End Close
- Run a disciplined monthly close process across all entities and currencies.
- Prepare timely, accurate management accounts (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) that can be shared with founders, investors, and other stakeholders.
Maintain the Ledger & Reconciliations
- Ensure every transaction is correctly coded in the general ledger.
- Perform and document reconciliations for bank accounts, wallets, payables, receivables, intercompany balances, and key control accounts.
Management Reporting
- Produce monthly and quarterly management reporting packs, including variance analyses vs budget and prior periods.
- Work with leadership to refine reporting so it’s decision‑useful while still grounded in solid accounting.
Audit & Statutory Compliance
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors, responding to queries and resolving issues.
- Support preparation of statutory financial statements and ensure compliance with relevant filing requirements.
AP, AR & Payments Oversight
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Ensure all payments follow documented approval workflows and are correctly recorded.
- Help maintain clean vendor and customer records.
Support Budgeting & Forecasting
- While the role is primarily historical, you’ll support leadership with actuals vs budget reporting and help ensure that budget assumptions reconcile to reality.
- Provide historical analyses and insights that inform future planning, without needing to own the entire FP&A function.
Data Room & Investor‑Grade Readiness
- Help maintain an investor‑ready financial data room (trial balances, management accounts, audit reports, key schedules).
- Make sure that at any point in time, the Network School’s finances can withstand the scrutiny of founders, investors, auditors, and regulators.
In short, you will be the person who makes sure the numbers are right, the controls are real (not just on paper), and the historical record of the Network School is something we can rely on to build the future.
What You'll Get
In addition to salary and equity, you’ll get a full membership on site at the Network School, eliminating most daily expenses. That includes room, breakfast/lunch/dinner, wifi, 24/7 gym, and more. So, this is a great role for someone who wants to lock in, save money, and level up…while making network states and startup societies real. If that sounds like you, apply below!
