Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work as a contributing member of a multidisciplinary team to design, build, and test electrical assemblies to support the development and production of our nanomechanical characterization tools. Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. Produces documentation for assembly and installation of electrical subassemblies including chassis layout and wiring harnesses. Assist in the fabrication of prototypes and limited production instruments. Prepares engineering change orders for existing products. Works with manufacturing to transfer new products from engineering to manufacturing and to troubleshoot issues. Manufacturing Engineers manage and assess risk of Product Life Cycle for products throughout all Phase Gate process by identifying exposure to key issues for each Phase Gate.

  • Phase 1 (Concept) – provides early vendor and supplier input along with input of new and similar manufacturing process of concept presented, highlighting probability of success through risk assessments and mitigation.
  • Phase 2 (Feasibility) – gives early input to engineering using DFx and DFMA processes and identifying key supplier requirements. Estimates cycle times based on Proof of Concept designs and creates processes for manufacturing based on FMEA. Develops preliminary QA plan for 1st article inspection and process tracking.
  • Phase 3 (Development) – drives PLC requirement and performs proof of manufacturing on beta systems, ranking of supplier selection, i.e. weak and/or unique single source conditions. Creates robust test plans for manufacturing and scales up production for release to manufacturing. Develops and designs tooling and fixtures based on capital equipment requirements and updates risk and mitigation plans.
  • Phase 4 (Scale‑up) – continues to drive PLC requirements and demonstrates all proof of manufacturing activities and PLC management, including ECO management, QA metrics and key performance indicators, i.e. First Pass Yield, Out of Box Quality, material obsolesces, scrap and BOM management, etc.

Manufacturing Engineering leads and transitions subsequent in‑sourcing strategies if required into Operations and works closely with Product Development, Manufacturing Operations, Manufacturing Engineer for sustaining products along with Product Development and Operations internal customers to:

  • Provide sustaining engineering expertise and project management of in‑sourcing strategies, including sustaining production requirements, quality improvement, and project management such as product transition, cost reduction, inventory reduction, and/or sourcing change.
  • Execute manufacturing quality improvement strategy through final functional verification process (Final Test), managing non‑conforming parts in process (NCMR), and closed‑loop corrective action (CLCR).
  • Lead strategic planning for Test, Manufacturing, and process creation.
  • Develop manufacturing documentation, tooling, and test fixtures for both contract manufacturing and operations.
  • Identify and execute on opportunities for gross margin improvements through risk and mitigation plans per PLC and sourcing strategies.
  • Lead projects related to best‑cost manufacturing and aligned with business objectives. Examples may include Insourcing, Outsourcing, and/or cost reductions – value engineering.
  • Lead product ownership from Proof of Manufacturing through obsolescence. Require support for product sustaining for both manufacturing plants of US and Malaysia for the particular product line.
  • BOM maintenance, engineering changes, design improvements, lean manufacturing, DMAIC, DFMA and DFx on NPI.
Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Mechanical layout of electronic components and wire harnesses
  • Design electrical assemblies and subassemblies for instrumentation control and data acquisition
  • Sourcing strategies
  • NPI (New Product Introduction)
  • Engineering and operations documentation
  • Sustaining production
  • Process improvements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Circuit design and PCB layout experience for both digital and analog circuits. Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools like OrCAD/Allegro, PADs, SolidWorks PCB or others.
  • Experience in electrical design for instrumentation control and data acquisition for automated machines including motor‑driven assemblies.
  • Able to select components, create schematics, and build assemblies to test.
  • Experience with a variety of meters and scopes for both analog and digital circuits testing.
  • Experience with embedded designs (micro‑processors/DSPs/FPGAs) preferred.
  • Good engineering analytical skills to design and build tooling and fixtures for mechanical or electrical/electronic models.
  • Ability to generate a range of solutions and choose the most appropriate.
  • Good understanding of engineering design and maintenance best practices.
  • Good organization skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Min 3 years current experience preferred, in electrical and automation assembly designs, including manufacturing engineering background using DFMA/DFx processes for design and fabrication.
