Overview
Assist the surgical team during endoscopic procedures; provide patient care before, during, and after the procedure; and educate patients about treatment.
Manage endoscopic equipment in cleaning and sterilizing, including endoscopes, biopsy forceps, and needles are safe to be used.
Communicate with consultants, other team members, and patients regarding the needs and progress.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists the Nurse Manager in overseeing the smooth running of Endoscopy and Day ward daily.
- Interview patients to obtain medical information; measure patients' vital signs, weight, and height; and administer medications for sedation during procedures.
- Arrange with Day ward and wards to prepare patients to arrive at Endoscopy according to the scheduled time. Enter particulars of all cases in the Endoscopy/Day Ward Record Book.
- Assist physician with all endoscopy procedures including colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, EGD, PEG tube placement, and ERCP.
- Ensure proper care and handling of all specimens after each procedure.
- Adhere to and apply all principles of infection control during endoscopic procedures, with the disinfection and sterilization of equipment, use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and disposing of clinical waste.
- Ensure appropriate care, maintenance and safe handling of scopes at all times.
- Maintain proper flow of clean and contaminated/dirty equipment and supplies in and out of the procedure room.
- Disassemble and reprocess instrumentation on a post-procedure basis as per current departmental policy. Assure high level disinfection of endoscopes and accessories.
- Deliver nursing care to all patients, including assess patient needs, plan, deliver and coordinate care and reassess/evaluate care.
- Participate in unit/organizational quality and safety initiatives to improve patient outcomes.
- Monitor and document to each intervention during the endoscopy procedure.
- Demonstrate safety and accuracy in the administration, monitor and document of all treatments, medications, and IV therapies.
- Provide a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for the patient.
- Conduct training for new staff.
- Responsible for reporting incidents to the Nurse Manager/Supervisor.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Requirements
- RN with at least 2 years experience.
- Preferably a Post basic certificate for Registered Nurse in Endoscopy.
- Valid annual practicing certificate.
- Able to write and speak in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
