The Director of Nursing (DON) is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and plays a critical role in shaping the organization’s strategic, operational, and clinical performance. Under the direction of the CEO/COO, the DON contributes to the development and implementation of organizational business plans, quality objectives, and clinical standards.
This position oversees the overall provision of Nursing and Infection Control services. The DON ensures that all services are delivered at the highest standards of safety, clinical quality, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
A. Administrative Leadership
- Participate in the development and execution of the hospital’s annual operating plan.
- Develop and implement departmental operational plans for Nursing and Infection Control. Key areas include:
- Staffing levels and workforce planning
- Recruitment, retention, and succession planning
- Staff competency assessment and performance management
- Departmental budgeting
- Quality indicators and audit requirements
- Develop, review, and update departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintain complete and accurate departmental records.
- Oversee performance of external clinical contractors.
- Attend executive and administrative meetings.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the CEO/COO.
B. Clinical Governance
- Develop, implement, and monitor effective patient care systems.
- Track and evaluate departmental quality indicators, ensuring accountability.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, legal requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
- Support, investigate, and respond to grievances and complaints.
- Participate actively in Hospital/Medical Staff committees.
- Support and drive continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with the Medical Director and other clinical leaders on clinical service delivery.
- Support the development and rollout of new clinical programs.
C. Resource & Workforce Management
- Determine workforce needs and ensure adequate staffing at all times.
- Recruit, select, and onboard competent and qualified staff.
- Create opportunities for continuous professional development and upskilling.
- Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and conduct annual PMEs for all direct reports.
- Promote a high-performance culture focused on accountability, teamwork, and service quality.
D. Facilities & Equipment Management
- Ensure that all departments under the DON have adequate facilities and equipment to support service delivery.
- Participate in evaluation and procurement of specialized clinical equipment.
- Ensure continuous compliance with environmental safety and care standards.
E. Quality Assurance & Patient Safety
- Lead the development, monitoring, and evaluation of departmental quality indicators.
- Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality patient care.
- Promote exemplary patient and customer service culture throughout the organization.
- Report quality outcomes to relevant Hospital and Medical Staff committees.
F. Training & Development
- Oversee planning and implementation of in-service trainings, orientation programs, and clinical education sessions.
- Identify skill gaps and development needs within the nursing and clinical teams.
- Oversee development and maintenance of department and patient education resources.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Professional Credentials
- Registered Nurse (State Registered Nurse – Malaysian Nursing Board).
- Post Basic Certification preferred.
- CPR / ACLS certification preferred.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent healthcare field preferred.
Professional Experience
- Minimum 5 years of nursing leadership experience in a hospital setting.
- Member of the Malaysian Nurses Association (preferred).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Strategic thinker with strong leadership, interpersonal, and emotional intelligence skills.
- Able to work independently with initiative and sound judgment.
- Skilled in managing conflict and leading diverse teams.
Leadership & Supervisory Responsibilities
This position requires high-level leadership capabilities with responsibility for supervising multiple departments and leaders. The DON must be able to lead individuals, build high-performance teams, and contribute to organizational strategy.
