Job description
Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Operating and monitoring high-pressure steam boilers, including performing routine start-up, shutdown, and blowdown procedures.
  • Continuously monitoring gauges, meters, and control systems to ensure correct pressure, temperature, water, and fuel levels.
  • Adjusting controls and valves to maintain optimal performance and meet production demand.
  • Conducting daily checks, inspections, and regular preventive maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, replacing worn parts) on boiler systems and auxiliary equipment (e.g., cooling towers, compressors, pumps).
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing faults or breakdowns in boiler operations and performing first-level repairs.
  • Coordinating with maintenance teams for major repairs and improvements.
  • Ensuring the boiler operation strictly adheres to all safety procedures and legal regulations (e.g., those set by DOSH/JKKP in Malaysia, or relevant national/local authorities).
  • Preparing the boiler and associated documentation for annual statutory inspections by relevant authorities.
  • Monitoring safety devices and taking prompt action to resolve any safety hazards.
  • Performing chemical analysis and testing of boiler feedwater and boiler water to prevent corrosion, scale, and deposits.
  • Making necessary chemical adjustments to maintain water quality specifications.
  • Maintaining detailed logbooks and checklists of daily boiler operations, readings, maintenance routines, repairs, and safety activities.
  • Reporting day-to-day activities and any abnormalities to the shift supervisor or Steam Engineer.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Certification: Must possess a valid official government‑issued Boiler Man Certificate of Competency (e.g., Grade 1 or Grade 2, depending on the boiler class and location). This is often the most critical requirement.
  • Education: Typically requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, with a vocational certificate, diploma, or advanced/graduate diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering fields often preferred.
  • Experience: Usually requires at least 1–4 years of working experience in the operation and maintenance of industrial boilers, particularly in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Strong knowledge of boiler systems, mechanics, controls, and safety standards.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical and operational faults.
  • Knowledge of boiler water treatment and chemical testing.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and manuals.
