• Act as principal adviser to the Chancellor, Prime Minister and Treasury Ministers on macroeconomy, fiscal policy and growth, and on the macroeconomic and microeconomic implications of wider policy issues.
• Lead Treasury's relationships with the Bank of England (including attendance at the Monetary Policy Committee and acting as Accounting Officer for the Reserves), the Office for Budget Responsibility, the Debt Management Office and its market relations, and international institutions such as the IMF and OECD; chair the G20 Framework Working Group.
• Provide strong leadership to two Treasury Groups comprising 200 staff, and contribute to the overall department as a member of the Executive Management Board.
• Champion economics in government as head of the Government Economic Service (GES), furnishing professional leadership for economists and analysts across HM Treasury and supporting the economic analyses they undertake.
• Lead the Economics Group in delivering high‑quality economic analysis and policy advice, including ongoing surveillance of the UK economy, macroeconomic and microeconomic policy support, and promotion of professionalism for economics and social research in government.
• Lead the Fiscal Group in ensuring the sustainability of public finances over the short, medium and long term through budgets and spending reviews, and in managing the government's balance sheet.

• Economic credibility and professionalism: a strong track record on economic policy, practical experience in the field and thought leadership in macroeconomics.
• Master's‑degree level economics: a minimum of a master's level qualification in economics.
• Knowledge of financial markets: a clear understanding and practical experience of how financial and bond markets function.
• Leadership: outstanding people leadership skills, including a proven record of accomplishment in leading teams and navigating a complex environment.
• Stakeholder engagement and influencing skills: strong influencing and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well with very senior stakeholders within HM Treasury, across government and more widely.
• Representation skills: ability to provide constructive challenge to, and positive engagement with, UK and international organisations.
