Job description

Do you have a passion for teaching and inspiring others? Are you a role model who wants to demonstrate evidence-based practice? Are you keen to assist with the management and improvement of clinical nursing staff?

In this role you will have the opportunity to educate staff and students in the clinical setting, while also being able to work clinically with the nursing teams in their highly specialised clinical areas. Working in collaboration with the Ward Manager to enhance the improvement of nursing staff, your educational skills and knowledge will be developed by the Oncology and Haematology Directorate Education Team who will assist with coaching you within this specialised area of professional education.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who has a creative outlook and can patiently teach topics in a variety of different ways to ensure the listener shows interest and understanding. You must be able to research and critically analyse topics to find the best answer along with demonstrating consideration and patience when listening to other people’s points of view. In return, the outstanding candidate can look forward to working in a professional environment with teams that are passionate about delivering exceptional care to patients and their families.

It is highly recommended that you meet with Francesca Baldassa (Haematology Ward Sister) and Francesca Lis (Oncology and Haematology Directorate Practice Development Nurse) to discuss the role.

Practice Development Practitioners will be able to:
  • Act as an exemplary role model for best clinical practice and Trust values
  • Work alongside learners to facilitate their independent learning
  • Work to an agreed job plan to maximise education delivery to support staff and patient safety/experience.
  • Manage their own time to ensure a balance between clinical education and education administrative activities
  • Actively promote and contribute to an inter-professional learning environment
  • Deliver education programmes at a divisional level and where required cross divisionally in support of organisational priorities.
  • Work as part of the local and corporate practice development teams
  • Assist in anticipating and addressing the educational needs of the service
  • Work across boundaries to proactively develop and sustain partnerships
  • Participate in audit, service improvement and research projects relevant to the clinical educator role

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals – the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence, and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence. These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via the OUH YouTube channel.

In 2023 NHS England launched its first sexual safety charter, and our Trust proudly signed it. We pledge zero tolerance for inappropriate sexual behaviour and commit to the ten core principles. Oxford University Hospital promotes a safe, respectful hiring environment.

If you want to make a difference with us, come and join our team. Together, we will uphold the highest standards of care and professionalism.

Prior to applying, please ensure you have read the Job Description attached for a detailed overview of the role, responsibilities, and person specification.

The post-holder will be an experienced, knowledgeable practitioner who provides clinically based practice development and education to the non-medical workforce. They will role model best, evidence-based professional practice. Clinical education support for all ‘learners at the bedside’ is a substantial part of this role.

The clinical educator will identify and support the learning needs of their clinical area. The clinical educator is key to ensuring the clinical area is a positive learning environment through acting as an expert resource, ensuring local training resources are appropriate and up-to-date, and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team and senior colleagues.

Specific education interventions will be provided and may be co-developed with the senior practice development and education team. They will also assist in coordinating the delivery and evaluation of training. The clinical educator is key to ensuring training is grounded in good practice and will be involved in the education element of clinical governance and quality assurance.
