Job description
Job Summary

The effective management of financial transactions is key to ensuring the ongoing financial stability of the Trust. St George's University Hospitals is offering an exciting opportunity for a Transactions Officer to join our Financial Transactions Team. This Band 4 position will primarily be based in the Employee Contractual Changes team at Jasmine Annex, St George's Hospital, with potential to work across other Trust sites when needed.

The role will report directly to the Payroll Liaison Manager.

About the Trust

St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000‑strong workforce.

Key Responsibilities
  • To undertake standard changes to staff details within the Trust to ensure they are accurate and up to date to allow for prompt payment.
  • To ensure that trust staff comply with correct documentation and processes for data completion.
  • To maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge of payroll processes, terms of service, income tax and NI calculations, statutory payments, deductions and pension schemes.
  • To manage day‑to‑day workload, ensuring work completion in line with payroll timetables.
  • To support preparation of reports to Trust committees on payroll and pension matters.
  • To process pension opt‑outs and resolve employee queries.
  • To maintain departmental filing systems and be aware of relevant legislation such as GDPR and NHS pension regulations.
  • To ensure staff complete statutory and Trust training.
  • To promote equality, diversity and non‑discrimination in line with Trust policies.
  • To comply with health and safety, data protection and no‑smoking policies.
  • To undertake duties consistent with the grade and service needs.
Qualifications and Experience
  • NHS Trust payroll experience (essential).
  • Excellent understanding of payroll processes and procedures, including income tax and NI calculations, statutory payments and pension regulations.
  • High level competence in basic Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of the ESR payroll system (desirable).
Skills
  • Good command of basic Excel, Word, Outlook and advanced keyboard skills.
  • Strong communication, listening and organisational skills.
  • Ability to convey complex information to all staff and management levels.
Other Requirements

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
