Hours: 37.5 hours per week, including on-call commitments, evenings and weekends.

Are you an enthusiastic and self‑motivated radiographer looking to develop your career within a dynamic and expanding imaging service? Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) is growing rapidly, and this is an exciting opportunity to join us at a time of significant investment and innovation.

MKUH operates across three sites, including our Community Diagnostic Centres, and we are preparing to open a brand‑new scanning centre in Spring 2026.

Our imaging department continues to evolve, with modern equipment supporting CT, MRI, ultrasound, DEXA, mammography, general X‑ray, fluoroscopy, interventional radiology and our recently installed Cath Lab. Milton Keynes is the largest city in Buckinghamshire, just 50 miles from London, and is known for its excellent transport links and exceptional green spaces, with a quarter of the city made up of parkland and woodland.

In this role, you will be part of a friendly and supportive team committed to delivering a high quality diagnostic service and excellent patient care in line with our Trust values. You will be expected to maintain high clinical standards, share best practice and play an active role in mentoring both apprentices and student radiographers.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
  1. To carry out high quality imaging examinations across a range of modalities to the agreed standard of the imaging department.
  2. To maintain a high standard of patient care and comfort and be patient focused at all times.
  3. Works within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to the Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS trust Radiation Safety Policy and national and local imaging standard operating procedures/protocols.
  4. To plan, prioritise and organise own workload within certain clinical areas of the department, e.g., Fluoroscopy, with support from senior colleagues as required.
  5. Works to a consistently high standard in a clean and tidy environment and ensures radiation doses are kept to a minimum using the ALARP principle.
Communication
  1. Possesses the skills necessary to deliver services to patients with a variety of presentations including the unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, confused, those with physical &/or mental disability and those exhibiting anti-social or threatening behaviour.
  2. Communicates effectively, empathically, and persuasively with patients to facilitate accurate positioning of patients and obtain diagnostic images. This will include dealing with patients (and their relatives or carers) who may have communication difficulties e.g., deafness or who speak a foreign language.
  3. Collaborates and generates good working relationships with other staff groups both internal and external. These include clinicians and other healthcare professionals, senior Trust management, patients and their representatives, external agencies, commercial suppliers, service engineers and visitors to the department; this is to ensure optimum patient flow and imaging equipment utilisation.
Teaching, Training and Research
  1. Plans and undertakes continued studies, both in the workplace and in own personal time to fulfil the annual CPD requirements to maintain HCPC state registration.
  2. Completes the training necessary to provide high quality diagnostic images within the defined scope of practice.
  3. Identifies teaching and training opportunities for the department, in discussion with the appropriate Section Head Radiographer.
Professional role responsibilities
  1. Practices in accordance with the professional, ethical, and legal codes of the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Society of Radiographers Professional Code of Conduct and Trust and NHS protocols and guidelines.
  2. Develops own skills, maintaining and developing competencies across the repertoire of the department as appropriate to grade.
  3. Displays and maintains an appropriate level of IT skills.
General Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrates excellent time management & prioritisation skills; takes responsibility for the management of own work activities and learning.
  2. Is fully conversant with departmental policies and supports the department in ensuring that performance complies with departmental and professional standards.
  3. Is aware of the requirements of Clinical Governance, Data Protection, Patient Confidentiality, IR(ME)R 2017, IRR17 and local and national Health and Safety Policies.
  4. Abides by current policies and procedures of the Trust and/or the Radiology Department and complies with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Safe Systems of Work.
Person Specification
Qualifications and knowledge
  • BSc (Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration
  • Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS)
  • Knowledge of diagnostic imaging procedures
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements
  • Sound awareness of data protection, freedom of information and confidentiality issues within NHS
  • Evidence of keeping informed of the current imaging techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR'17 and associated codes of practice)

Specific requirements
  • Able to perform the duties of the post with reasonable aids and adaptations i.e., see functional requirements of apprentice radiographer
  • To participate in the departmental shift system including working weekends, evenings, and nights.
  • Satisfactory pre‑employment checks. Occupational Health and Disclosure and Barring Service clearance and references spanning 3 years.
  • Has an acceptable attendance and punctuality record at work.
  • Ability to travel to all trust sites
