About Us

The Robarts Research Institute within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University has made its mission to accelerate medical discovery. Through a powerful integration of basic and clinical research, we are driving major advances that impact on many of today\'s most devastating diseases.

The research group led by Dr. David Seminowicz (https://www.daslab.org/) aims to understand the brain mechanisms of pain and cognition in healthy individuals and people suffering from chronic pain.

Responsibilities

The Research Associate works under the direction of Principal Investigator (PI), and will carry out and oversee research to assist the PI in achieving their research outcomes. The role will analyze existing and newly collected multimodal neuroimaging data, and will set up and run new EEG, fMRI, or EEG-fMRI studies on pain and cognition. The Research Associate will support and train staff, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in the collection and analysis of EEG and EEG-fMRI data, and in resolving issues that arise in the research environment. The role will have developed an independent research portfolio, and will support and operationalize new and innovative research opportunities for the PI, develop research and project plans, and design, build and run experiments.

The Research Associate will evaluate and interpret experimental results, contribute to report, grant and protocol preparation, prepare manuscripts for publication, and other written material for presentations and submissions to various stakeholders as required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology, Biomedical Science or a relevant field

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in EEG-fMRI data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant writing, in a related academic research environment with an independently developed research portfolio

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics in an academic environment and with best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and training in the collection and analysis of EEG, fMRI, and EEG-fMRI data
  • Knowledge of computer programming with advanced skills in software and applications used to produce and analyze research outcomes (such as Matlab, Python)
  • In depth knowledge with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
  • Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
  • Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one\'s own unit
  • Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and with an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
  • Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the Facility’s events and activities
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
  • Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach the research team to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the leadership team
  • Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Ability to interpret and identify key results from research and to succinctly summarize research findings
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant scientific/research principles
  • Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
