Overview

Learning Services Librarian (Term) – Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC), UBC Library | Vancouver Campus. Full-time, 12-month term (leave replacement). Anticipated start date: November 2025. Posting End Date: October 2, 2025. Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on the Posting End Date. Job End Date: November 2, 2026.

Location: Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Chapman Learning Commons. Department: UBC Library, IKBLC. Employer: University of British Columbia Library.

Position Overview

The Learning Services Librarian will lead the planning and development of partnerships, programs, services, budgets and the assessment of learning support programs and services offered through the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC), particularly the Chapman Learning Commons.

Working Relationships

Reports to and works closely with the Assistant Director, IKBLC. Collaborates with the Learning Commons, UBC Library units, other IKBLC units, UBC departments and external organizations in developing programs and services for Learning Commons and IKBLC users.

Duties
  • Leads the planning, implementation and assessment of learning support programs and services offered through the IKBLC, with a focus on the Chapman Learning Commons.
  • Designs and delivers instructional programs for students, faculty, staff and community members, using in-person workshops and online tutorials (e.g., Library Skills Tutorials).
  • Stays current on developments and emerging trends in learning commons service models and changes in teaching and learning activities across the University.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across the Library, IKBLC, UBC and other organizations to ensure programs and services align with current and emerging student needs and meet the Statement of Purpose and Charter of Principles for the IKBLC and the mandates for the Chapman Learning Commons and UBC Library.
  • Works with campus partners to develop and support initiatives addressing the specific needs of first-year and international students and provides support to UBC departments as required.
  • Maintains the Chapman Learning Commons website and virtual services using a variety of programs and software.
  • Participates in the Digital Tattoo Project, including maintaining the website and supervising students focusing on digital literacy topics, including Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI).
  • Oversees the equipment lending program at the Chapman Learning Commons Help Desk, including purchasing new equipment, defining lending policies and ensuring consistency across library branches.
  • Collaborates with Chapman Learning Commons staff to design and deliver staff training related to programs and services.
  • Participates in planning and implementing policies, procedures and services that support the goals of the Chapman Learning Commons, IKBLC and UBC Library.
  • Provides in-person support at the Chapman Learning Commons Help Desk and other service points as required.
  • Coordinates services and special projects as required.
Supervision and Administration
  • Supervises 3 student employees and assists in supervising 14 additional student employees.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • Works to integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into professional practice, including student hiring and supervision, training, public services and creating accessible content. Contributes to a library environment that supports and celebrates EDI.
  • Supports EDI through professional development opportunities and maintains awareness of EDI initiatives at departmental, campus, institutional and provincial levels, such as UBC’s Inclusion Action Plan and Indigenous Strategic Plan.
Professional Development and Scholarship
  • Accepts responsibility for personal continuing professional education.
  • Develops and maintains skills and demonstrates leadership relevant to the position.
  • Keeps up-to-date on developments in library service, resources and technology and broader issues in librarianship; proactively seeks to implement and integrate into practices.
  • Participates in professional organizations and engages in professional development, scholarly and service activities under the terms of the Collective Agreement.
Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Masters-level degree from an accredited program of library, information science, or equivalent internationally accredited program.
  • Experience building productive relationships and working with a diverse population of colleagues and/or patrons in line with the UBC Respectful Environment Statement.

PREFERRED

  • Experience developing and providing information services and learning support resources to a broad community of users.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in student learning and teaching tools.
  • Experience using Wordpress and H5P.
  • Ability to manage diverse responsibilities, initiate and carry out projects, independently and in teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening.
  • Working knowledge of appreciative inquiry and applying it in the workplace.
  • Experience delivering constructive feedback in a positive, productive manner.
  • Demonstrated creativity and openness to experimentation; ability to foster a creative environment.
  • Experience developing partnerships and evidence of successful collaboration in programs and services.

Terms of Appointment and Salary

Appointment: Full-time, 12-month term with anticipated start date in November 2025. The successful candidate will be a member of The University of British Columbia Faculty Association; terms governed by the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. Eligibility: Applications from librarians with up to 2 years of professional library experience; internal candidates will be considered regardless of experience. Salary: Starting salary is $83,955 to $86,520 per annum, commensurate with experience, qualifications and internal parity. UBC offers a comprehensive benefits package.
