Position Description

The McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery invites applications for a full-time clinician‑scientist position as member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three‑year (renewable) appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro), within the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The MUHC is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

The successful candidate will join the Neuro’s Epilepsy Group — a multidisciplinary team of internationally recognized clinicians, clinician‑scientists, and researchers with a longstanding tradition of excellence in understanding and treating epilepsy. The group includes epileptologists, neuropsychiatrists, a neurosurgeon, a neurogenetics specialist, and cognitive neuroscientists who provide comprehensive tertiary in‑patient and out‑patient care. The team is deeply engaged in both clinical and fundamental neuroscience research and leads robust teaching programs in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Close collaboration with a clinical nurse specialist, nutritionists, a dedicated social worker, and neuropsychologists ensures truly integrated, patient‑centered care.

Unit members benefit from a dynamic and collaborative research and teaching environment and close links to the clinical mission of the Neuro. Around 200 patients are evaluated in the epilepsy monitoring unit every year for pre‑surgical investigations, and the unit is linked to the outpatient clinics at the Neuro, which follows 4,000 patients with epileptic seizures every year. This integrated environment puts epilepsy research and training at the Neuro in a strong position to generate high‑quality research findings and to develop novel methods that can directly improve patient care.

The unit also serves as a key hub in the wider McGill research milieu across several departments, schools, and affiliated research institutes. Its members also work closely with colleagues in the Neuro’s McConnell Brain Imaging Centre. The Neuro’s state‑of‑the‑art neuroimaging facility includes 3T and 7T MRI, MEG, and PET imaging. The unit recently installed a cutting‑edge sleep HD‑EEG lab, advanced computing, and MRI‑compatible HD‑EEG and neuromodulation systems with the help of federal funds.

The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America. Across its universities and research institutes, Montreal is a leader in artificial intelligence research, further adding to the vibrant environment supporting top‑notch neuroscience. The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, collectively referred as The Neuro, has embarked on a journey to set a global precedent as the first academic institute to fully embrace the principles of Open Science. In that context, the Institute‑Hospital highly encourages its researchers to work under these principles.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. They may have primarily a clinical focus—with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care and teaching—or a combined clinical and research focus with interest in advancing innovation in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment.

Clinical responsibilities will include both in‑patient and out‑patient care at the Montreal Neurological Institute‑Hospital (The Neuro), which hosts one of Canada’s leading epilepsy clinical and surgical programs. Regardless of background, the successful candidate will be expected to engage actively in the academic environment of The Neuro, where novel therapeutic and investigative approaches are central to patient care.

Candidates possessing a clinical focus will contribute substantially to teaching, supervision, and mentorship of medical students and residents, and participate in the academic and administrative life of the department. Candidates with a research focus will be expected to pursue independent or collaborative high caliber research that strengthens the epilepsy clinical‑research interface and fosters integration with broader neuroscience programs.

Protected research time and access to laboratory facilities within The Neuro will be available for candidates demonstrating strong research potential and a clear vision for developing innovative approaches in epilepsy care.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold, or be eligible for, licensure as a neurologist in the province of Quebec;
  • Be either Clinicians with an MD, Clinician‑Scientists with an MD‑PhD, or possess equivalent research‑intensive training;
  • Have advanced training and the demonstrated capacity to excel in academic neurology, including specialized clinical expertise in the area of epilepsy, strong medical education skills, and a well‑defined clinical research program;
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are required. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
Assets
  • Demonstrate advanced EEG interpretation competency with CSCN examination certification (or equivalent).
