Job description
Overview

This job posting is to staff future upcoming vacancies (various schedules). Cornwall is a beautiful community with a population of 47,000 situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Eastern Ontario. The city offers a wide array of urban amenities and a growing economy with a high quality of life. The Health Care Aide/Attendant (HCA) (Personal Support Worker) is responsible for providing personal care, support, and assistance with daily living activities to residents within the Glen Stor Dun Lodge (GSDL). This includes personal hygiene, mobility, nutrition, emotional support, and social engagement, in accordance with individual care plans. The role promotes dignity, independence, and quality of life while following the standards set by the Ministry of Long-Term Care and working closely with registered nursing staff and other interdisciplinary team members.

Responsibilities
  • Follow directions for care as indicated in the resident-specific care plan, performing other tasks when required as per directive of registered staff.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, mobility, serving food and feeding, ensuring comfort and dignity, while providing a safe environment.
  • Monitor and report changes in residents’ health status, mobility, behavior, or needs to registered nursing staff.
  • Assist residents with mobility, positioning, and safe transfers, using assistive devices and following proper lifting techniques.
  • Provide assistance with medication reminders and non-controlled substances, as directed by registered staff and per policies.
  • Support residents\' participation in recreational and social programs to enhance their overall well-being. Provide 1:1 as required under Registered staff directive.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and tidy environment in resident rooms and common areas, adhering to infection prevention and control procedures, workplace safety standards, and reporting any potential safety hazards.
  • Record daily care and interactions accurately in documentation systems as required.
  • Foster positive relationships with residents, families, and team members, promoting a culture of respect, empathy, and person-centered care.
  • Work collaboratively with nurses, other healthcare professionals, and support staff to deliver coordinated care services.
  • Support and advocate residents’ rights and ensure concerns are communicated appropriately.

Position Requirements

Education & Certifications:

  • Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate from a recognized college or program.
  • Membership with the Ontario Personal Support Worker Association (OPSWA).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience providing care and personal support, preferably in long-term care, home care, or healthcare setting.

Equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Resident-Centered Care: Demonstrates compassion and respect while promoting residents’ independence and dignity. Ability to build a meaningful therapeutic relationship with residents.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with residents, families, and healthcare professionals. Active listening skills with the ability to communicate with residents that have cognitive impairments.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to monitor residents’ health status and ensures accurate reporting and documentation.
  • Collaboration: Works collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment, supporting team goals and fostering positive relationships while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to respond promptly to residents\' needs, identifying issues and escalating concerns when necessary.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adjust to changing resident needs, schedules, and organizational priorities with professionalism.
  • Health & Safety Awareness: Strong knowledge of infection prevention, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe handling techniques.
  • Time Management: Ability to balance multiple care duties efficiently while maintaining quality service.
  • Emotional Resilience: Ability to remain patient, empathetic, and composed in emotionally demanding situations.
  • Confidentiality: Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality in accordance with municipal policies and legislation.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed within the Glen Stor Dun Lodge, involving direct contact with residents.
  • This position requires shift work, which may include hours such as nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Cognitive demands include being aware of resident behaviours while working in a long-term care environment.
  • Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, bending, moderately heavy lifting, and assisting residents with mobility.

  • Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
