Job description

Responsibilities of the Master

1. Ensure that Flag State and/or the Classification Society are informed, when required, of any incidents.
2. Adhere to and implement the company's policies.
3. Maintain effective communication within departments ashore and onboard for safety, quality, and environmental protection.
4. Manage, delegate, and control work activities with the shipboard management team, respecting responsibilities onboard.
5. Keep the Chief Officer informed of all vessel operations to enable command if necessary.
6. Prepare standing and daily orders for navigators according to guidelines.
7. Provide the management team with information and records regarding:

• Company's SMS
• Flag State legislation and guidance
• Port State legislation and guidance
• Classification societies' rules and regulations
• Industry guidance

Ensure compliance with good seamanship and report failures of statutory equipment affecting safety and pollution prevention to relevant authorities.

Implement health, safety, and environmental policies aboard and motivate crew compliance.

Issue clear orders and verify adherence to the Safety Management System (SMS).

Review and update the SMS based on practical experience, including onboard training and drills.

Oversee vessel dry-docking procedures as per documentation.

Report deficiencies to ashore departments.

Ensure vessel readiness before departure, including planning voyages and navigation.

Maintain up-to-date charts, manuals, and certificates, and ensure crew qualifications meet requirements.

Ensure appropriate medical care for embarked personnel.

Supervise cargo operations to comply with rules, instructions, and contracts.

Enforce physical and operational security procedures per applicable requirements.

Identify non-compliance issues, analyze causes, and ensure they are addressed and eliminated.

Supervise GMDSS communications to meet international standards.

Plan and record work/rest hours for officers and ratings to ensure compliance with regulations.
