The Experimental Medicine Unit in the Department of Medicine at Stellenbosch University (SU) performs laboratory-based research complementing the clinical priorities of the bigger department. Research is conducted on a range of models, including cell culture, zebrafish and rodent models of non-infectious disease, as well as in humans.

Duties/Pligte
  • Pro-active project and programme management on a day-to-day basis to ensure optimal functionality of the group via:
  • Ordering and appropriately storing the required research reagents and materials;
  • Monitoring research project regulatory compliance;
  • Coordinating student laboratory training, competence assurance, and compliance to laboratory research ethics and guidelines;
  • Arranging servicing, maintenance and calibration of instruments and apparatuses;
  • Administrative tasks (e.g. filing, general ordering and financial support, meeting scheduling, etc.);
  • Managing postgraduate course administration, including first contact liaising with potential new postgraduate students;
  • Coordinating events such as community engagement initiatives or small social events;
  • Maintaining research-related information on the MS Teams channel via regular information updates;
  • Performing scheduled after hours work if needed.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
  • MSc degree in a health science related field.
  • GLP or GCLP certification.
  • Knowledge of laboratory chemical and/or dangerous goods handling and storage regulations.
  • At least two years' part-time employment experience in the SU system.
Recommendation/Aanbeveling
  • Proficiency in the use of chemical and/or biological sample storage and inventory systems.
  • Reliable transport for after-hours work.
  • Knowledge of website administration and/or social media network use.
