The Product Development Technician – Mechanical Testing Lab is responsible for supporting the execution of physical and mechanical tests on automotive components during the product development process. This role involves preparing test samples, setting up and operating various testing equipment, collecting accurate data, and maintaining proper documentation. The technician works closely with engineers to ensure that components meet performance, durability, and safety standards, contributing directly to the validation and improvement of new products.
Primary Function
- Prototype Support
- Help assemble prototypes based on drawings.
- Set up tools and equipment for testing.
- Assist in modifying or adjusting prototypes as needed.
- Testing & Validation
- Perform mechanical and functional tests on parts.
- Use testing machines and follow standard procedures.
- Record and report test results clearly.
- Do basic maintenance and calibration of test equipment.
- Keep lab area clean and organized (follow 5S).
- Check and manage tools, parts, and supplies.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Keep accurate test records and reports.
- Regularly report test activities and results to the direct supervisor.
- Update activity schedule or tracking sheet to reflect work progress.
- Help prepare simple technical reports and forms.
- Support data entry for quality documents (e.g. APQP, PPAP).
- Outsourced Testing Coordination
- Arrange and coordinate testing with external labs or service providers.
- Communicate clearly with third-party vendors on test requirements and timelines.
- Travel when needed to witness external testing or deliver samples.
- Ensure external test results are documented and reported correctly.
- Join activities like 5S, Kaizen, or Lean projects.
- Share ideas for improvement based on work experience.
- Support changes in product or process when needed.
- Teamwork Across Departments
- Work with Quality, Production, and Design teams.
- Support test runs and trial builds.
- Help investigate and solve issues when parts fail.
Secondary Function
- Identify and report unsafe / abnormality operations to leader / supervisor immediately.
- Understand the various products that are manufactured in the Company.
- Compliance all health and safety regulations of the company and wearing the personal protective equipment (PPE) at production area.
- Work with respect to the rules & regulations of the Company.
- Recommend process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
- Assist & participate in any improvement activities throughout the organization.
- To comply ISO 9001: 2015, IATF 16949: 2016, ISO 14001: 2015 and OHSAS 18001 requirements.
- Undertake any other ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Qualification requirements
- Local worker – Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical & Electronics/ Mechatronics / Industrial Engineering/ Manufacturing Engineering/ Manufacturing Technology or any relevant engineering background.
