Job summary

A pre-production studio in Malaysia is looking for an experienced Story Artist to help develop visual sequences for animated features. The ideal candidate should have 4-8 years of experience, a strong portfolio showcasing their skills in storyboarding and character design, and the ability to work collaboratively with directors and other artists. This role emphasizes adding emotional depth and humor to storytelling while ensuring the structure and theme are effectively conveyed.

Qualifications

Established in 2002, Studio Climb is a pre‑production studio specializing in comprehensive design services such as conceptual illustrations and design for character, environment, prop, and matte painting.

Studio Climb also provides idea‑generation, visual development, storyboarding, and directing for film, animated features, and game cinematic services.

In 2013, TRANS PICTURES, a China‑incorporated company, was established by Studio Climb to partner with Chinese media industry; focusing on developing, producing and commercializing animation and live‑action movie projects. TRANS PICTURES owns and co‑owns its IP titles, produces titles for third parties, and collaborates with international marketing and merchandising companies to enhance IP commercial value.

Story Artist – Animated Feature
Responsibilities
  • Brainstorm ideas to develop visual sequences.
  • Collaborate alongside our directors, heads of story, and cross‑departmental artists.
  • Add emotion and humor to the story’s needs, maximizing entertainment value.
  • Further the structure and theme of a film.
Portfolio Requirements
  • Portfolio should include a combination of storyboards, beat boards, and personal work (sketches, drawings, etc.), including 3‑5 samples that demonstrate strong drawing skills and ability to create appealing characters and practical environments to meet story needs.
  • Show ability to create emotion, humor, appeal, and action through continuity boards; emphasis on uniquely subtle, dramatic acting preferred.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cinematic staging and cutting.
  • Show ability to work collaboratively.
Work Experience
  • 4‑8 years working as a storyboard artist or illustrator.
  • Professional experience on multiple feature films, television series, comics, or games as a story artist is a major plus.
Skills
  • Practical knowledge of cinematic language, acting and staging.
  • Strong storytelling abilities that feature character, emotion and movement.
  • Strong understanding of the principles of animation; emotion, acting, movement are required.
