Role Overview

One Legal Limited is a New Zealand–based boutique law firm working across commercial, litigation, conveyancing, and general firm matters, including a portion Chinese-speaking clients.

We are seeking a Senior Legal Executive to work directly with the Principal Lawyer.

This role exists to absorb delegated legal work, executive-level legal administration, and first-line client communication, freeing the Principal Lawyer to focus on legal advice, judgment, and decision-making.

You will be expected to think, draft, and communicate to a lawyer’s professional standard, while operating under delegation and supervision.

Legal advice, final judgment, and sign-off remain with the Principal Lawyer.

This is not a junior assistant role, not clerical administration, and not general office support.

Key Responsibilities
Legal Execution & Preparation

Execute delegated legal work from the Principal Lawyer across different file types

Draft, revise, and clean legal documents to a professional standard

Review and improve AI-assisted drafts using sound legal judgment

Read and summarise agreements conservatively and accurately

Prepare issue lists, redlines, and risk notes for lawyer review

Deliver clean, review-ready outputs with minimal iteration

Handle first-line client communication on delegated matters

Answer and return client phone calls on behalf of the Principal Lawyer, within defined authority

Provide clear, professional updates based on instructions and file status

Escalate matters appropriately where legal judgment is required

Communicate calmly and accurately under time pressure

Executive-Level Legal Administration

Triage emails, messages, and calls before escalation

Summarise communications and propose next steps

Coordinate tasks across matters and ensure follow-through

Track delegated actions and close loops without prompting

Reduce noise and cognitive load for the Principal Lawyer through structured preparation

Working Hours & Availability (Important)

This role follows New Zealand business hours.

Malaysia time: early start, early finish

During these hours, you must be:

reachable via messaging and phone, and

responsive to the Principal Lawyer and clients.

Outside these hours:

you are not expected to be routinely available, and

work is structured to avoid after-hours contact except in genuine urgency.

If you cannot reliably work NZ hours, this role is not suitable.

Required Skills & Experience

Legal background (law degree or legal executive / paralegal experience)

Strong English drafting ability

Lawyer-standard mindset in issue spotting and risk awareness

Professional phone and client communication skills

High attention to detail and execution discipline

Ability to work independently under delegation

Comfortable receiving direct feedback and responsibility

Experience in litigation, conveyancing, or commercial matters

Malaysian-qualified lawyers (welcome to apply if comfortable with an execution-focused, delegated role)

Use of AI

Comfortable using AI tools as a drafting and analysis accelerator, with human legal judgment applied at all times.

Autonomy & Progression

This role is designed to grow in autonomy.

Initial scope focuses on execution and preparation

Greater independence, client handling, and responsibility are earned through demonstrated judgment and reliability

Compensation and scope progression are aligned to capability, not tenure.

Assessment Process

Shortlisted candidates will be required to:

Complete an online assessment

Complete a practical legal drafting test under time constraints

Attend an interview

Only candidates who demonstrate accuracy, judgment, and reliability will proceed.
