Job Summary
  • Mandated by BNM’s Credit Risk Policy to act as Independent Credit Reviewer for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia Berhad (SMBC MY).
  • To review and ensure:
    a) Quality of credit risk assessment and rigour of credit approval processes, including in respect of the scope of information obtained for credit decisions;
    b) Credit decisions are in accordance with the SMBC MY’s credit risk strategy, credit risk policy, and relevant legal and regulatory requirements;
    c) Scope, effectiveness and timeliness of credit risk monitoring activities;
    d) Accuracy and timeliness of ratings assigned to counterparties; and
    e) Appropriateness of credit classifications and provisioning levels.
Job Responsibilities
  • To prepare and plan Individual Credit Review Plan and Annual Credit plan based on a sound understanding of the credit risk concentration of SMBC MY.
  • To lead, supervise and conduct independent credit reviews on SMBC MY’s credit risk management and credit assets controls and framework to ensure it is robust and to identify any inadequacies and recommendations for improvement, where required.
  • To prepare and escalated credit review and assessment reports, which includes both identified issues/lapses and recommendations, arising from the independent reviews conducted to the senior management, Board Risk Management Committee (BRMC) and the Board Audit Committee (BAC) for their notation and deliberation.
  • To follow-up, track implementation and validate outcome of remedial actions undertaken by the auditee/reviewee pursuant to recommendations proposed by the Local CRVD, Regional CRVD, Internal Audit Department, external auditors and regulatory authorities.
  • To act as a liaison to the Regional CRVD and to build and foster good relationship with external stakeholders (eg. Regulators, authorities, etc) and internal stakeholders (eg. SMBC MY staff and senior management).
  • To continuously keep updated and relevant with latest developments in credit risk management as per guidelines and policy documents issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) from time to time, SMBC Group policies, market best practices etc. to ensure delivery of quality independent credit review program.
  • To guide, educate and upskill credit staffs of SMBC MY to ensure high quality outcomes from credit analysis performed.
Job Requirements
  • Degree or professional qualification in Finance, business, economics, accountancy, banking or related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of banking related experience in credit related areas.
  • Relevant AICB certification having Certified Credit Professional (Business) certification.
  • In depth knowledge of Credit (Credit Assessment and Credit Risk), MFRS9 Expected Credit Loss (ECL), Basel II & III of Capital Adequacy Framework as well as other BNM’s policies and guidelines and consistently keep abreast with latest industry trend and best practices.
  • Has good understanding and ability of financial statements and cash flow analysis.
  • Strong problem‑solving capability to formulate and innovate strategies and solutions to deliver and coordinate the achievement of high-performance results and mission-critical goals.
  • Able to command good and effective communication with internal stakeholders and working with regional peers to align operations and processes.
  • Possess professional and interpersonal skills to establish good rapport and working relationship with stakeholders which includes ability to interact and communicate well with the regulator/external auditor.
  • Possess good command of English, proficient in both written and oral communication skill, strong analytical and report writing ability.
  • Ability to multi-task, independent, disciplined, self‑motivated, agile, work under pressure to meet deadlines set, and able to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Able to present reports to Management and Board.
  • Able to manage a team and guide the team to meet objectives of the department.
