The CAD Technician is central to translating high-detail visualization assets into functional technical models. This role manages the entire process of down-converting and optimizing production-ready models from source files created in Cinema 4D (or equivalent high-end 3D software) into accurate, lightweight, and standardized SketchUp and 2D/3D AutoCAD formats for use by design, sales, and manufacturing teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Source File Processing and Conversion
- Primary Conversion: Manage the process of importing, cleaning, and simplifying complex, high-polygon 3D models sourced directly from Cinema 4D (or similar .fbx/.obj source).
- Engineering Translation: Re-engineer the visualization geometry to create accurate, simplified, and well-structured 3D models in SketchUp and AutoCAD suitable for design planning and technical detailing.
- 2D Generation: Extract production-ready, standardized 2D drawings (plans, elevations, sections) from the simplified 3D AutoCAD models, ensuring layer, line weight, and dimensioning standards are strictly adhered to.
2. Quality Control and Standardization
- Define and enforce strict geometry, layering, and naming conventions across all derived formats (AutoCAD, SketchUp).
- Conduct rigorous quality control (QC) checks to ensure that the technical models accurately reflect the product specifications defined by the source Cinema 4D model, while optimizing topology and removing unnecessary detail.
- Maintain consistency and accuracy during the data transfer process (e.g., ensuring material application and SKUs are correctly associated across all derived files).
3. Library Management and Maintenance
- Oversee the administration, version control, and accessibility of all technical CAD assets.
- Document the complete workflow from the Cinema 4D source to the final published AutoCAD/SketchUp library file.
4. Collaboration and Support
- Liaise directly with the Visualization team to understand the structure of the Cinema 4D source files and anticipate conversion challenges.
- Provide technical support and training to internal teams on the best practices for using the standardized SketchUp and AutoCAD library files.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Essential
- Core CAD Proficiency: Expert-level proficiency in 2D and 3D AutoCAD and Advanced proficiency in SketchUp Pro.
- 3D Visualization Software: Proven knowledge or direct experience with high-end 3D visualization software such as Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, or Blender, specifically understanding their file structures, exporting processes, and data cleanup requirements.
- Data Translation: Demonstrable experience in the process of translating and simplifying complex 3D geometry between different software environments (e.g., from polygonal models to clean NURBS/solid models).
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years' experience working in a CAD library or product data management role within a related industry.
Desirable
- Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
- Familiarity with scripting or automation tools to streamline the conversion process.
- A relevant technical qualification (Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture).
