Deputy Head of Occupational Health

An exciting opportunity hasarisen to work in our busy Occupational Health (OH) & Wellbeing service.This is a shared service between South West Yorkshire Partnership FoundationTrust and Leeds & York Partnership Foundation Trust and also provides OHservices to external contracts. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic andmotivated full-time deputy head.

The role will involvesupporting the occupational health manager with the operational management ofthe department and will include line management responsibilities. The successful applicant will also provideclinical supervision to clinicians within the team and as such prioroccupational health experience and qualification is essential. The applicant should have excellentorganisation and time management skills, be able to prioritise competingdemands and work effectively under pressure.The successful candidate will need to possess excellent communicationskills, decision making skills and will work collaboratively with all keystakeholders.

Main duties of the job

Supporting the Head of occupational health inthe day to day operational management of the service.

Line management responsibilities.

Clinical leadership and supervision forclinicians in the team.

Attendance at relevant key meetings and leadingteam meetings in the absence of the Head of occupational health.

Maintaining a small occupational healthclinical caseload.

Undertaking departmental audits, updatingpolicies, protocols and procedures.

Work effectively and collaboratively with otherkey departments in the Trust to include infection control, recruitment, healthand safety and human resources.

Assist in management of change processes withinthe team in line with evidence based practice.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

The OH Clinical Lead will support the Head ofService in the day to day operational delivery of clinical services to both theinternal and external customer base. Towork collaboratively with all members of the OH Team to ensure the effectivedelivery of services in accordance with agreed objectives, key performanceindicators, local and national targets and internal and external qualitystandards.

The post holder will support the Head ofservice in the development and delivery of the Trusts strategic vision forstaff health and wellbeing, to meet the demands of a modern NHS workforce andthe requirements and expectations set out within the NHS Peoples Promise.

KEY RESULTAREAS:

Thepostholder will:

Provideclinical and professional leadership to the wider OH team, responsible for embeddingand developing the departments clinical core and professional competencies.

To deputisethe Head of Occupational Health at key meetings as required.

To act as linemanager for the service.

Providestrategic advice regarding occupational health & staff wellbeing tomanagement internally & externally

Undertake clinical audits to develop anevidence base of compliance against internal and external standards.

Ensure maintenance of clinical excellence inline with Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) guidance and ethics, SafeEffective Quality Occupational Health Services (SEQOHS) standards andlegislative requirements.

DevelopOD service clinical and operational protocols and procedures.

Horizon scanthe changing priorities and opportunities within the Occupational Health at alocal, regional and national level and escalate emerging risks and act quicklyand decisively.

1.1Care/service/functionprovision:

Manage a caseload in Occupational Health including complex case management (approx. 50% oftime)

Produce andupdate Written Instructions working collaboratively with the medicinesmanagement team and ensure adherence to the Green Book.

Ensure robustmonitoring and ordering of medicines under written instructions and by theclinical team.

Support theHead of Service in achieving SEQOHS compliance.

Use bestpractice to analyse evidence-based practice and bench marking to informclinical practice.

1.2 Working as part of a Team:

As part of ateam, deliver person centred care whilst meeting the service standards andobjectives.

Workclinically to identify actual and protentional learning opportunities andsupport the development of colleagues, particularly if there are specificlearning needs identified.

Lead the teamto deliver on the shared purpose, as much as on their individual objectives,looking out for opportunities to celebrate and acknowledge high standards.

Provideinformal teaching, support and clinical supervision to the wider MDT.

Support thewider MDT team promoting the comprehensive holistic assessment of employees toachieve optimum outcomes for the employee, their manager and the organisation.

To deal withall clinical queries .

Workcollaboratively with other functions ie Infection Control, Health & Safety,and operational management and provide an expert OH opinion.

Responsiblefor establishing and developing internal development programme in collaborationwith other senior clinicians which helps develop skills, encourage reflectivepractise and support peer review of practice.

1.3Managing Self:

Participate inclinical supervision to develop skills and knowledge of clinical care andpractice and apply continuous reflection on own practice).

To beresponsible for management clinical risk within your case load and across staffunder your supervision.

To beresponsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activitiesand maintain a portfolio that reflects personal development.

To adhere tothe relevant professional standards and code of conduct and be conversantwithin the scope of professional practice.

1.4 Management Supervision and Support:

To beresponsible for the line management of the OH service, including responsibilityfor recruitment, workload management and annual, first line disciplinary,performance and grievance issues, staff development reviews and appraisals andsupervision,

Represent theHead of OH at internal and external meetings as required and take decisions forthe service within the scheme of delegation.

Lead andsupport the team in delivering the requirements sent out in the OH OperationalPolicy to ensure the delivery of an evidence-based service.

Lead onaspects of change in working and clinical practices of the team to induct andprovide support for new team members, assessing and evaluating competence.

To work with Head of Occupational Health tomanage resources and ensure the service is delivered in budget.

Deputise for the Head of OH at Budget meetingsas required.

Be an authorised signatory in the absence ofthe Head of Service, including authorising expenditure for vaccines.

Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Developed working knowledge and understanding Information Governance and confidentiality.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant national guidance eg Faculty of Occupational Medicine, the Green Book, NICE etc.

Qualifications
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse.
  • Post Graduate Diploma or Degree in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing - Occupational Health Nursing or equivalent relevant qualification or experience.
  • Masters/Advanced Clinical practitioner in OH or relevant subject.
  • Teaching qualification.

  • Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post. A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to the need to act with fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where the sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).
Experience
  • Extensive post registration experience in an Occupational Heath setting at a senior level.
  • Experience of working autonomously as a clinical practitioner in a nurse led service.
  • Evidence of audit and evidence-based care.
  • Evidence of demonstrating effective leadership within collaborative MDT team working.
  • Demonstrates a high level of numerical data and analytical skills including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Experience of effective staff engagement and management.
  • Experience of management within a health & welling being setting in the NHS.
