The post holder is responsible for assessing patient care needs and for developing, implementing and evaluating care plans within the critical care environment. This includes the care of acute cardiothoracic post‑operative patients at Level 2 or 3 and those within the intensive care area.
Key Responsibilities
- Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care.
- Inform the team leader of any changes that may affect patient care.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
- Maintain nursing records in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines.
- Promote an economic, effective and efficient nursing service.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients in line with the Trust Risk Management Strategy and Policies.
- Supervise and demonstrate procedures to qualified and/or unqualified staff.
- Respect confidential information and uphold the principles of Caldicott and the Data Protection Act.
- Contribute to the development of Essence of Care and Clinical Quality.
- Ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team and with patients/carers.
- Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
- Maintain evidence‑based knowledge and skills for caring for critically ill patients at Level 2 and 3.
Leadership & Management
- Coordinate and manage own workload and supervise others.
- Practice safe and efficient use of resources.
- Manage allocated workload independently.
- Monitor and maintain health, safety, and security of self and others.
- Liaise with the management team to ensure continuity and quality of patient care.
- Delegate responsibilities appropriately when acting as team leader.
- Maintain a Personal Development Plan and support the development of junior colleagues.
- Report incidents, accidents and complaints to the ward/department manager and complete Trust incident forms.
- Ensure all equipment is checked and maintained in safe working order.
Professional Development & Quality
- Participate in clinical supervision, peer group support, orientation and teaching programmes.
- Lead responsibility for specific functions or areas of knowledge/skills within the team.
- Maintain up‑to‑date skills and knowledge and a professional portfolio.
- Attend mandatory study days, in‑service training, and Clinical Supervision sessions as per Trust policy.
- Contribute to research, audit and the implementation of clinical quality improvement initiatives.
- Act as a mentor and assessor of nurses in training.
- Report any incidents of non‑compliance with safety, risk management or safeguarding policies.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Fully registered with the NMC and possessing critical care experience.
- Eligibility to work in the UK (see UKVI guidance for sponsorship requirements).
- Experience in cardiac postoperative critical care and/or intensive care at Level 2 or 3 is essential.
- Excellent communication skills, initiative, drive and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to demonstrate evidence‑based practice and effective clinical decision making.
