The successful candidate will join a vibrant Paediatric Neurology department composed of 8 Paediatric Neurologists and 2 Paediatric Neurodisability Consultants.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit.Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Please read attached Job Description and Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

The GNCH Paediatric Neurology Service provides tertiary level care for children with neurological disorders throughout the North East of England and Cumbria. This is achieved through a region-wide PICU retrieval service for acute emergencies, a dedicated paediatric neuroscience inpatient facility on ward 1b and outpatient services provided at GNCH and through a network of outreach clinics across the region. The post-holder, though based at GNCH, will be expected to contribute to this outreach model of outpatient care. The NUTH NHS Trust provides regional paediatric neurosurgical and neuro-oncology services on the GNCH site where the region-wide Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and retrieval team are co-located.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

For an informal discussion and further information regarding the opportunity and Directorate, please contact: Dr Henriette van Ruiten, Head of Department on 0191 2820528, via email at henriette.vanruiten@nhs.net or Dr Jason Gane , Clinical Director, on 0191 2824502, via email at jgane@nhs.net @nhs.net.

About us

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion. We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.

We're also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 1.84 million patients 'contacts' each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people's race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.

Job responsibilities

Duties of the Post

The post-holder will be based at GNCH and assume the duties of a Locum Consultant Paediatric Neurologist, managing the inpatient and outpatient care of children with neurological problems, providing clinical opinion and support to paediatric intensive care at GNCH and FRH, General Paediatrics and other paediatric specialties at GNCH, RVI (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and Freeman Hospital.

The appointee will be expected to liaise with the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT) individually and on a collective basis at formal meetings, such as complex patient case discussions held periodically on PICU and discharge planning meetings for inpatients. The post-holder will also be expected to take a full and active role in departmental and directorate level initiatives on student and post-graduate (trainee) education, supervision, audit and quality improvement, as well as administrative tasks to support the department.

Each paediatric neurology consultant contributes to the outreach programme and the appointee will also take on responsibility for specified outreach clinics within the region. Appropriate secretarial support will be provided. Personal office and computer facilities will be provided in the Paediatric Neurology department.

The Paediatric Neurology team has recently adopted a new on-call system with hot and cold weeks. A hot week involves being consultant of the week on-call, which currently occurs at 1 in 4.5 weeks, 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm on weekends. This may change following expansion of the team.

During the cold weeks when not on-call, Paediatric Neurology consultants hold in-reach and out-reach clinics, and participate in teaching, trainee supervision, clinical governance and service development activities within the Paediatric Neurology department.

Leave cover for the appointee will be provided by Paediatric Neurology colleagues and it is expected that the post-holder will share the cover of his/her colleagues when they are on leave.

Proposed job plan

Precise details of responsibilities, sessional commitments and job plan will be based on the needs of the service and interests of the successful applicant. A proposed job plan can be found in Section G and it is possible that mutually agreed changes may be made after discussion.

The post will attract 10 programmed activities. This is split as 8.5 for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). This working pattern will be reviewed once the post holder is in place.

An annual appraisal and job planning will be mandatory as per current Trust policy. The appraisal will be undertaken by a trained appraiser approved by the Clinical Director in Childrens Services. The key issues from the appraisal will be relayed initially to the Clinical Director of Childrens Services and then to the Medical Director. If a job plan is unable to be agreed this will be referred to the Medical Director for arbitration.

Teaching, research and audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute to undergraduate teaching, core and specialty paediatric training. The appointees help and involvement in current research within Paediatric Neurology will be welcomed and the development and extension of his / her own research fields will be encouraged.

CPD

The appointee will take part in the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health CPD programme. The Trust supports such programmes and provides appropriate amounts of study leave and expenses to carry them out.
