Medical Secretary Apprentice - Elderly Care and Stroke

An opportunity has arisen for an apprentice secretary within the Stroke and Elderly Care Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a self‑motivated, enthusiastic and organised individual to join a busy and dynamic team to provide secretarial support to the growing Stroke and Elderly Care Department and assist in the safe, smooth, efficient and effective running of the service.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work within the Stroke and Elderly Care Department for the consultants and provide secretarial and admin support to include excellent audio typing, good and polite telephone manner and use of Microsoft Word, PAS and other IT systems in the working environment. Teamwork is an important part of this service to maintain a successful workflow, completion of tasks and to meet and achieve goals.

Person Specification
Education, Qualifications & Training
  • GCSE - Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics or equivalent (we accept Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English)
Experience
  • Secretarial / Administrative experience within the last 2 years
  • Experience of working with computer systems, to include Microsoft Office (and PAS)
  • Experience of working with staff at all levels
Skills, Abilities & Knowledge
  • Evidence of secretarial skills including excellent audio typing and minute taking
  • Evidence of effective communication skills both written and oral
  • Evidence of ability to work without direct supervision within broad procedural guidelines
  • Evidence of ability to respond quickly to changing priorities, organising own workload to meet deadlines
  • To be able to demonstrate integrity and professionalism when dealing with difficult situations
  • An understanding of the meaning of confidentiality and the requirement for this to be maintained
  • Evidence of ability to build and maintain good working relationships within a team
  • Evidence of ability to input data accurately and timely and be able to produce reports when required
  • Evidence of ability to exercise judgment when dealing with queries and to analyse and resolve problems
  • Familiarity with using PAS (Patient Administration System) desirable, however training can be provided
