A leading educational recruitment firm is looking for a compassionate Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in Hailsham, UK, in January 2026. The role focuses on providing tailored support for students with various learning and emotional needs, emphasizing inclusion and independence. Are you a compassionate, skilled, and resilient individual dedicated to advocating for and supporting students with complex learning and emotional needs? We are recruiting an exceptional Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our supportive secondary school team in January 2026.
This role is integral to our Inclusion department, focusing on providing tailored support to students aged 11-16 across the curriculum to ensure they achieve their educational potential and successfully transition into adulthood.
Reporting to the SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), you will:
Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and EHCPs: Deliver specific, targeted support programs, adapting resources and teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs outlined in students' plans.
Specialist In-Class Support: Provide high-quality one-to-one or small-group interventions within mainstream classes, supporting students with a range of needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Speech and Language needs, and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges.
Promote Inclusion and Independence: Encourage students to engage fully with their peers and the curriculum, fostering self-esteem, confidence, and crucial independent learning skills.
Behaviour Management: Utilise positive and proactive strategies to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours, maintaining a safe, purposeful, and nurturing learning environment.
Collaboration and Reporting: Monitor and accurately record student progress, providing detailed and regular feedback to the SENCo, class teachers, and external agencies (e.g., Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists).
Pastoral and Physical Care: Provide general care, support pupils with their emotional well-being, and assist with personal care and mobility where required (full training provided).
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will possess:
Proven experience working with secondary-aged pupils (11-16), ideally supporting those with specific and complex SEN.
A deep understanding of different types of learning difficulties, disabilities, and effective intervention strategies.
Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to adapt your style to the specific needs of individual students.
Exceptional patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm and proactive during challenging situations.
A genuine passion for promoting the welfare and academic achievement of all pupils, and a commitment to safeguarding.
Strong organisational skills to manage documentation (IEPs, progress reports, records).
