Job description
Overview

Go back Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Emergency Department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is an exciting and expanding department in one of the busiest and highest-performing non-elective trusts in the country. We are looking for enthusiastic, forward thinking team players to help build on the current excellent reputation and trust ethos.

We have several posts for experienced Emergency Medicine doctors (ST4+ equivalent) who wish to pursue a fellowship in an interest of their choosing. Fellowship postholders are awarded up to 20% of non-clinical fellowship time whilst the remaining time is spent providing Emergency Medicine care on the full rota (which is self-rostered) with the higher trainees and other senior clinical fellows.

Please indicate in the supporting information of the application form which one of the fellowship posts you would like to apply for. Alternatively standalone SCF ED posts are available without the fellowship option.

Main duties of the job

The main service commitments of Senior Clinical Fellows will be, under the supervision of the Consultants, to supervise the FY2s, as well doing 'hands on' work alongside the other middle grades. The department has initiated new patterns of working to achieve the current targets and integral within these are the 'lead middle grade' 'resus lead' and 'rapid assessment team' which are roles undertaken by the middle grade doctors within the department.

The middle grade would also be expected to run the daily review clinic. The Consultants are very committed to teaching and post-graduate training and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development. The appointee will be expected to already have or to have obtained during the course of the appointment certificates in ATLS and ALS. Most of the Consultants are Instructors on these courses.

Previous postholders have been awarded a job split of up to 70:30 Emergency Medicine : Key Interest. The split will be agreed with the educational supervisor depending on projects or postgraduate courses that the postholder wishes to undertake, and regularly reviewed against progress demonstrated towards their PDP.

These jobs are for Senior Clinical fellows who will be based at Chelsea and Westminster Emergency Department and are expected to provide clinical cover for the department which can be self-rostered or agreed with the rota co-ordinator.

About us

We provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and a number of clinics across London and the South-East. We have over 6,000 members of staff that are PROUD to Care for nearly one million people. Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children's, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

We\'re one of the best performing Trusts in the country. We\'re also one of the top trusts to work for - our staff say they\'re engaged, motivated, and would recommend us as a place to work and receive treatment.

Our Trust has been rated by the Care Quality Commission as \'Good\' in all five of the main domains of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, giving us an overall rating of \'Good\'. We\'ve also been awarded an \'Outstanding\' rating for \'use of resources\' by an NHS Improvement inspection.

Our facilities are some of the best in the country. We have been investing around £10 million a year in our estate. We are currently spending £25 million on expanding our adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and redevelopment of our children\'s unit at West Middlesex - in partnership with our charity, CW+ and generous donors.

Job responsibilities

Commencing June - August 2025 for 12 months (alternative start days may be considered). Please outline in your application which one fellowship you are applying for.

This post is aimed at those who are keen to progress their ultrasound skills beyond level 1 ultrasound, integrate their ultrasound skills into everyday shop floor work and participate in ultrasound focussed research under a mentor. This is supplemented by a PgCert in medical ultrasound which is funded along with ultrasound specific days. These involve 1:1 scan reviews by a Consultant with special interest in ultrasound, and self-directed study. We are a dynamic team of consultants of whom 5 are at least PgCert in medical ultrasound. The department has 4 state of the art ultrasound machines and we incorporate ultrasound skills into clinical work and both SHO and middle grade teaching. The GH lead consultant can provide opportunities to get involved in existing projects, currently involving on-going work in Uganda, Ethiopia and India. Previous projects have included a successful RCEM LMIC grant for developing virtual simulation, raising awareness about vulnerable and marginalised populations in the ED and working on capacity building training in India and virtual clinical grand rounds in Uganda, Ethiopia and field work in Bangladesh.

3. Academic: You will be supported and encouraged to produce a piece of academic work e.g. a poster, publication or reflective essay

Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellowship

This is an excellent opportunity to gain training in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) and be supported through a post graduate qualification in SEM.

If the successful candidate is studying for an MSc or Diploma in SEM these sessions can be arranged with the rota co-ordinator. The remaining time will be spent attending physio and fracture clinics, radiology sessions and gaining experience in sports medicine. You will also have the opportunity to arrange external courses and lead / supervise on SEM projects related to EM. SEM experience can either be arranged by the candidate, or we can help in arranging this. Three of the adult EM consultants and one of the paediatric EM consultants have post graduate qualifications in SEM.
