Overview

Otology & Balance Fellow (ST8 level) November 2026-October 2027 Applications are invited for an Otology & Balance Fellow at ST8 Level in ENT Surgery based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The successful candidate will work closely with our experienced consultants, led by Professor Peter Rea, enhancing their surgical skills to a level that will enable independent practice as a consultant in this area of ENT surgery. The appointment is 12 months.

The Otology team perform all aspects of middle ear surgery and run the nationally acclaimed Leicester Balance Centre. There is a busy mastoidectomy practice for both cholesteatoma and CSOM with exposure to traditional and endoscopic techniques, and dedicated adult and paediatric BAHA programmes. There will be opportunities to undertake ossicular and stapes surgeries, as well as most middle and external ear procedures. The Balance Centre in Leicester hosts some 7,000 appointments per year and will allow the Fellow to learn advanced assessment techniques as well as management. A number of major research projects are on-going and the successful candidate will be expected to assist with research projects that suit their needs. Leicester is also one of only 4 dedicated PCD units in England.

This post is designed as a post CCT position, but those nearing completion of their specialist training programme or equivalent will be considered. Please note however that this period may not be accredited for training by the Royal College of Surgeons.

Responsibilities
  • The appointment will be at the grade of ST8 for both daily clinical work and for on-call work.
  • The Department serves the entire Leicestershire area with a number of sub-specialty interests being represented.
  • There are close links with the Leicester University Medical School.
