Union Representative

Job Overview:

Under the general management of the President and Director of Operations and taking daily direction from the Senior Steward, the Union Representative is responsible for assisting and supporting the Senior Steward.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for developing knowledge of:

  • The Master Agreement and other IATSE Local 891 collective agreements, current issues, and relevant case law.
  • Relevant BC Labour Relations Board decisions, current issues, and proceedings.
  • The Workers Compensation Act and relevant regulations, such as the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Health and safety issues, policies, and procedures, including understanding Actsafe’s roles and policies.
  • The BC Human Rights Code prohibited grounds for discrimination and the duty to accommodate.
  • Various other bodies which interact with the operation of IATSE Local 891, such as benefit carriers and payroll companies.
  • The Constitution, By-laws, practices, policies, and procedures of IATSE Local 891, including the roles and responsibilities of the Senior Steward, as set out in the Local’s constitution.
  • The operation of dispatch and member database and all relevant work issues in the industry affecting IATSE Local 891; and all other operational components of Local 891, including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety, Health and Welfare, Membership, and Training.
  • Assists the Senior Steward in the administration and execution of the Collective Agreements and all legislative requirements. This includes educating members and employers and engaging in conflict resolution while representing the Senior Steward’s objectives.
  • Responds to all problems or concerns that any members may have promptly. This may involve coordinating discussions with other individuals such as, but not limited to, the OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) Representative who conducts WorkSafe claims management and appeals.
  • May be required to attend meetings to inform or assist the members in any way and maintain a visible and helpful presence to the membership.
  • Makes regular visits to location sets, studios, off-production shops, and lockups, and workplaces our members have.
  • Provides daily written reports of all visits, providing documentation of issues and conversations.
  • Assists the Senior Steward in appointing shop stewards when necessary.
  • Assists in overseeing and supporting shop stewards in their interactions with members and Employers, maintaining good ongoing communication, and acting as a liaison between the Employer representatives and IATSE Local 891.
  • Work towards establishing and maintaining a friendly and cooperative dialogue with industry employers.
  • Assists in the ratification of stand-alone agreements on site.
  • May support and assist the Member-at-Large or organizing efforts as required. Participates in special projects and other duties as needed and assigned.
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

Required Experience:

  • Desirable: 5 years of experience as a shop steward.
  • Desirable: 5 years of motion picture experience in both pre-production and production.
  • Labour relations experience

Qualifications:

  • IATSE Local 891 Shop Steward course.
  • OH&S Incident Investigation course.
  • Complete knowledge of payroll, including but not limited to prem. days and penalties.
  • Moderate computer and report writing skills.
  • Must have a safe and reliable vehicle that can be used for work.
  • Recommended: knowledge and understanding of how to perform job safety compliance inspections, including hazard analysis.
  • Recommended: Occupational Health and Safety Certificate from BCIT or equivalent.
  • Recommended: Provisional Construction Safety Officer Certification CSO(P).
  • Recommended: IATSE Anti-Harassment and Bullying in the Workplace Course.
  • Must work well within a team environment and alone, often in a stressful, challenging, and fast-paced environment with minimal errors.
  • Must be able to learn and follow new directions quickly and without repetition and demonstrate initiative, diplomacy, confidentiality, and good judgment.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, telephone manners, and written and verbal communication skills, and must demonstrate a positive attitude in dealing with others.
  • Must organize workflow, solve problems, and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Should be able to understand payroll calculations.
  • Must navigate filming sites and be familiar with industry stakeholders.
