Career Opportunity:
We have an exciting full-time opportunity for an Electrical Engineer in Training with a focus on electrical systems design (protection, control, and apparatus) within our Edmonton Engineering team. Reporting to the Consulting Engineer, the successful candidate will be accountable for providing Engineering, and occasional Field support for projects in the heavy industrial, petrochemical, and oil sectors; ultimately providing superior client experiences.
Accountabilities
- Apply practical application experience and knowledge of power systems protective relays related to industrial projects.
- Prepare Construction Work Packages, including technical drawings and supporting design documents.
- Provide overall support to project definition and implementation.
- Preparation of development stage documents including Design Base Memos and Engineering Design Specifications.
- Assist with procurement for specified equipment, materials, and parts.
- Coordinate electrical inspection services.
- Conduct QA/QC checks of outgoing documents.
- Manage document control activities within the client’s doc control systems and Magna’s systems.
- Develop proposals based on audits, studies, and recommendations in response to client requests.
- Apply project management techniques and quality control measures to ensure consistent financial performance and continuously meet client expectations.
- Work with project teams effectively through collaboration, support, team focus, and mentoring of fellow team members.
- Provide status updates on projects to Client Project Manager(s), Magna Senior Project Engineer(s) and Magna Team Leader.
- Work safely around low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems in a variety of environments, including utilities, manufacturing, mining, and oil and gas.
- Write procurement specifications for electrical equipment.
- Prepare bid analysis summaries and purchase recommendations.
- Complete technical report writing.
- Interact with clients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Identify and implement process improvements.
- Various other duties as required.
Requirements
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- BSc Electrical Engineering with 1 to 4 years of electrical engineering or technical field services experience.
- OR
- Electrical Engineering Technologist accreditation with 1 to 6 years of electrical experience.
- Working towards APEGA Professional Engineer designation, or registered CET with ASET with interest in attaining P. Tech.
- Experience in developing and interpreting results from ETAP power system simulation software is an asset.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to self-manage with proven initiative and client focus.
- Proficient computer experience in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a dynamic work environment.
- Excellent time management skills with an attention to detail.
- A positive, “can-do” attitude.
- Team player with excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplined team environment.
Skill Assets For Applicants
- Electrical design experience, preferably in a petrochemical environment, field instruments and electrical equipment is an asset.
- Working knowledge of E&I design tools (ie: ETAP, AutoCAD, MicroStation, SmartPlant) is an asset.
- Knowledge of P&IDs, loop and single line diagrams, instrument data sheets, protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, MV and LV power distribution, and electrical apparatus such as switchgear, motor control centers, VFDs, protection relays, and transformers is an asset.
- Knowledge of E&I equipment design, installation and operating requirements for hazardous and non-hazardous locations as per the Canadian Electrical Code is an asset.
- Experience in some or all of the following industries is an asset:
- Pipelines.
- Manufacturing.
- Utilities.
- Petrochemical Facilities.
