The University Counselling Services (UCS), within Health & Wellbeing under the Office of the President, designs, implements, and evaluates programmes that support the general student population, as well as students exposed to acute, mentally stressful events.

The Locum Counsellor/Psychologist provides professional counselling and psychological support to students and contributes to a campus wide approach to mental health and wellbeing. The role includes counselling assessments and interventions, crisis management, case management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders and external partners. The Locum Counsellor will be part of a dynamic, multi‑disciplinary team dedicated to enhancing student wellbeing and will support service needs during designated shifts or periods of high demand.

• Provide professional counselling services in person and online for the NUS student population.
• Knowledgeable in counselling modalities, including risk and needs assessments and delivery of evidence‑based intervention plans.
• Conduct case formulation, prepare assessment reports, present cases, and make referrals to relevant services within the social services ecosystem.
• Escalate and co‑manage at‑risk and crisis cases with senior mental health practitioners as appropriate.
• Document and maintain accurate, timely clinical records in accordance with UCS policies and procedures.
• Respond to and manage crisis situations, ensuring appropriate safety planning, escalation, and follow‑up.
• Advocate for student mental health needs and coordinate care across services and stakeholders.
• Maintain clinical documentation and case records that meet UCS and University governance requirements.
• Work collaboratively with schools/faculties, student affairs offices, Hostels, and other internal and external units to support students with complex mental health issues.

• Proficiency in recognised counselling approaches and tools for diverse issues and conditions.
• Strong risk assessment capabilities with the ability to provide appropriate support and interventions.
• Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in clinical and operational work.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with internal stakeholders and external partners.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively within a team.
• Strong command of written and spoken English.
• Cultural competence and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to provide strategic support aligned with UCS and University goals.

• Master’s degree in counselling, counselling psychology, or Clinical Psychologist.
• At least eight (8) years of professional counselling and/or psychological practice in a related field.
• Prior counselling experience involving crisis intervention and crisis assessments.
• Preferably a clinical member and registered counsellor with the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC) and/or Singapore Psychological Services (SPS) and/or other equivalent professional body.
• Awareness, understanding, experience with school system, esp. in tertiary education. Is an advantage.

• Experience in specialised modalities such as group work, trauma‑informed practice, and couple therapy is helpful.

• Willingness to work at a different work timing (12:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.) and to support after‑office hours duties as required.
