Job description

Assist the Head of Therapy in establishing, implementing and administering unit policies and procedures in accordance to MSQH Service Standards.

Ensure established unit policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programmes, and service standards are adhered to.

Interpret unit policies and procedures to new staff.

Clinical:

Participate in the development of clinical practice guidelines.

Assess patients with actual or potential impairments, pain, functional limitations, disabilities or other health related conditions using detailed history taking, as well as specific tests and measures for screening, establishing a diagnosis and monitoring change.

Plan intervention strategies that incorporate the application for selected approaches and techniques supported by the best evidence available to produce changes in the patient’s functional status and then communicating the plan to the patient and interdisciplinary team.

Implement selected interventions safely to relieve pain; achieve and maintain health and fitness, functional independence and physical performance, and manage the identified impairments, disabilities and limits to participation.

Evaluate health status as a baseline for monitoring or to determine the result, impact or effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention.

Screen for chronic and secondary conditions to promote prevention and early intervention.

Practice diligent and accurate clinical documentation in Hospital Information System (HIS).

Be competent in the use of a wide range of rehab equipment and modalities.

Delegate allocated tasks to Physiotherapist / Rehab Assistants and supervise where appropriate, to maximise efficiency and to achieve desired quality of care.

To undertake clinical audit or other projects to promote evidence-based practice, develop the service and maintain efficiency and effectiveness.

Training and Education:

Participate and conducts clinical in-service training to Physiotherapist and Rehab Assistants.

Conduct general orientation of new staff of Rehab Centre.

To develop and deliver training programmes for a wide range of professionals and carers to educate carers and significant others in the understanding of both the therapy process and any intervention relating to the management of patients medical and social needs.

Administrative and Management:

Ensure that Rehab equipment and modalities in use are clean and safe, and regularly maintained for safety as per professional and organisational standards of practice.

Collate and maintain Physiotherapy inventory record.

Respond to Incident Reports related to Physiotherapy services e.g. falls, burns and etc.

Compile and maintain relevant documentation, records and reports for inspection by the appropriate authorities, both internal and external auditors.

Participate in any assigned task forces or attends meetings as required.

Perform any other related duties as assigned by the reporting supervisors.

Research and Development:

Conduct research activity for improvement as well as a quality indicator.

Undertake surveys and audits in own work area.

Participate in clinical audits as required and action findings.

Communication and Relationships:

Patients will have a range of medical and psychosocial problems that require the physiotherapist to utilise motivational and persuasive skills to facilitate rehabilitation both in an individual and group setting.

Listen to patients and carers to promote and practise shared decision making.

Communicate with patients and carers in order to positively develop therapeutic relationships.

Provide prompt updates on patients' progress and teach a range of patient management strategies to family/carers.

Active participation in multidisciplinary meeting for seamless care coordination and suggest other professional input requirements. Share physiotherapy strategies to optimise patient care.

Develop effective interpersonal skills in managing conflict and resolution.

Assist in the management of complaints and serious incidents investigations.

Decisions and Judgements:

To act independently to make complex clinical decisions relating to assessment, differential diagnosis, planning, and implementing and evaluating treatment programmes leading to discharge.

Plan and implement own treatment care plan from analysis of assessment results and using developed clinical reasoning skills.

Planning and Organisation:

Ability to co-ordinate and prioritise workloads – able to multi-task as well as be self-disciplined and highly motivated.

Demonstrate a flexible approach in order to ensure patient care is delivered.

Physical, Psychological, Emotional and Environmental demands:

Physical skills

Skills to perform a wide range of physiotherapeutic manual techniques.

Knowledge of how to use specialist equipment – required for day to day use with specific patients e.g. communication aids, special seating, standing frames etc.

Standard keyboard skills – required for daily use of IT equipment.

Manual handling skills – trained to a level as required for daily use in the workplace.

Physical effort

Direct manual handling of patients, with due regard for own safety, including manoeuvring patients, carrying equipment, pushing wheelchairs, arranging seating required on a daily basis.

Skills required assisting with therapeutic handling dependent on clinical area.
Psychological demands

High level of concentration needed for prolonged periods on a daily basis. This is required in order to make clinical decisions during all aspects of assessment and treatment taking into account any cultural/linguistic differences. High level of knowledge required on a daily basis in order to discuss/report on a patient’s difficulties with their family, medical colleagues and etc.

Constant need to be flexible to the demands of the environment including unpredictable work patterns, deadlines and frequent interruptions.

Meeting the needs of training and delegating work to junior physiotherapists and rehab assistant, while maintaining the highest standards of clinical care to patients and their families.

Dealing with staff competency or performance issues.
Emotional demands

Communicating frequently with distressed/anxious/worried and emotionally demanding patients/families.

Managing patients with challenging behaviours and a range of complex difficulties including the application of appropriate management strategies.

Providing emotional support to junior colleagues and peers.

Environmental and working conditions

Working within infection control and health and safety guidelines in order to deal appropriately with highly unpleasant conditions related to patient contact as they arise; including frequent exposure to saliva, body fluids, odours and head lice.
